Hi, my name is Caleb. I’m really not very good at talking about myself, but if you’re reading this you probably want to know about me, so I’m going to try.

Pretty much everything I’ve learned about music, I’ve learned from other artists. I’m not going to be able to talk about my music without talking about the people who influence and inspire me.

I first learned how powerful a perfect relationship between lyrics and music can be when I heard the Ben Harper song “Another Lonely Day”. I was 15 or 16 years old, I think. This discovery played a big part in my decision to begin playing the guitar. The chords sing the lyrics and the words are the chords. The song just fits. It sounds familiar the first time you hear it. I remember really wanting to be able to express myself in that way. I think that the lyrics are the lifeblood of a song, they make a great song come alive.

Ani DiFranco’s writing blows my mind. I think she’s a genius. Artists like her, John Mayer and Adam Duritz of Counting Crows are the people I’m measuring myself against. Not in a competitive way, I just think they set the bar for great writing, and I aspire to be able to express myself as creatively and effectively.

As a guitarist I went through a fairly heavy DMB phase, I also learned more than my share of Jimi, Martin Sexton and SRV songs. If lyrics are the lifeblood of a song then, the instrumentation is the heart. It gets those words where they need to go.

Playing the guitar was always fun for me. I enjoy it. There’s never an internal battle where I feel I should practice but want to go do something else. Playing is often what I want to do.

As a guitarist I have a bit of a short attention span, meaning I really have a hard time playing something the same way twice. I really love making my music percussive; I play with rhythm, muting techniques and syncopation, maybe a bit more than I need to. I really can’t help it though. I personally like writing songs that I think stand on their own. I want to be able to perform, without feeling like I can’t play a certain song without my drummer, or thinking ‘that song can’t work without the violin part’. I’m a minimalist in that way. The guitar is sufficient for me. Part of the reason I feel this way is because I’ve seen Martin Sexton perform solo shows about 7 or 8 times. The guy is in the pocket with himself. If you ever get a chance to see him live, do it.

Is Ani DiFranco more talented a writer than a guitarist? Or is her voice her biggest strength? What about Martin Sexton?
I can’t answer that question, they are so gifted at all three. My favorite artists do so many things so well, but I think the main three are songwriting, instrumental prowess and vocal ability. That’s the trinity. I’m constantly trying to improve in those areas. See what I mean when I say these artists set the bar?
I’m just trying to catch up. These are the people I’m chasing.

Take a listen and let me know how I’m doing.
