Details:
THE INSPIRATION:
Use a single device (the newly released Korg Kaossilator) to create an ambient & synthetic yet musical CD of textures and stories. Silver Spheres is a collection of vignettes - some playful, some dark, some deeply electronic, and others soulful -- capturing the mood and the essence of the titles in sonic imagery.

THE VIGNETTES:
Silver Spheres - Layered strings, gentle bells and a swirling lead synth - cyclical, bright, shimmery - like the spheres.

Solar Flare - A bright trumpet forms a fiery backdrop for a suite of electronic storms - the unique flares shooting out from the sun.

Energy - Sizzling electronic waves with an electric percussive pattern and tympani all representing the explosion and power of pure energy.

Frogs I - King Log - Inspired by a children''s story about the quest for a king, and how King Log was the first frog king. Innately playful with the various frog sounds created and a reminder to be careful what you wish for.

Silver Spheres (Reprise) - A return to the Silver Spheres punctuated with bright periodic arpeggiations and morse-like patterns.

Laboratory - A down tempo backdrop evocative of energy and chemicals mixing and reacting in a laboratory. The pace of the lab is captured as experiments run their course.

High Wire - Visions of clowns, high wire acts, and chicanery with a bright brass lead and a happy backing pattern in this trip to the circus or Bourbon Street.

Quasars - An ambient journey across space and time, with tweeter-bursting bleeps, blorps, feedback and a didgeridoo lending an outback feel to capturing the sounds landing at a giant radio telescope.

Dreamtime - A dark stormy dreamtime of power and its expression. Distorted guitars, a peppy lead, and feedback with a tribal drum pattern.

Frogs II - Conversations - A playful revisit to the frog swamp as the frogs "talk" to each other in their myriad of voices high and low.

Assembly Line - A strong deep, pattern of parts moving through the line, mechanical, rote. Assembly steps get their own sounds and motion while a bright trumpet lead is a counterpoint celebrating individuality on the line.

After Hours - A dusky jazz number with soulful synthetic saxophone. The drums have a brushlike feel, and the sax is expressive yet simple throughout - winding down the night.

MAKING THE MUSIC:
In late 2007, Korg released the Kaossilator in Europe and Japan. In early 2008, the tiny synthesizer made its way to the USA. Silver Spheres was composed and performed entirely using the Kaossilator. The incredibly simple signal path was Kaossilator > MicroMemo > 5G iPod for recording. The recorded WAV files were imported into Mackie Tracktion 3, and Mackie Stereo Reverberation (84% dry, Bright Smallish Hall) was applied identically to each track. The tracks were tipped and tailed, and mastered in SONY CD Architect 5, normalizing the entire CD for volume balance. There are no overdubs, no multitracks, what you hear is what the Kaossilator put out (with the exception of that tiny bit of reverb for depth and the normalization to keep all the tracks at the same volume). I hope you like it!

ABOUT THE FRONT COVER and SONG 1 IMAGE...
While finishing up the Wings of Apollo CD, I found the Silver Spheres image at NASA in the photo of the day archives. I thought the picture so wonderfully captured the technology and technological gleam associated with engineering in the late 1960s and found it inspirational.
