Details:
Born and raised in New Mexico, David had an eclectic exposure to music from a very early age. In addition to the Big Band and Jazz his parents played often at home on the “Hi-Fi”, there were yearly trips to Tesuque pueblo near his home town of Los Alamos, where the drumming and singing of the Tewa Indians instilled a reverent respect for tribal rhythms and tones. In addition, frequent exposure to Spanish and Mariachi music at gatherings and festivals integrated the culture of European and Mexican music structures into his knowledge base. Of course, Country-Western music also played a significant part in this childhood baptism of music.
David played bass and rhythm guitar in several bands through High School, as well as backing vocals. While earning his BA in Mass Communications at NMSU, he studied music and developed his keyboard skills with piano lessons and a minor in music. Performing at the University and local venues, Duff honed his live guitar chops, focusing on Pop and Smooth Jazz primarily.
During his years in the Navy, he was stationed in Southeast Asia, and made use of the opportunity to study Eastern music structures and styles, eventually incorporating them into his unique style and compositions.
Currently performing weekly at the Wildflower in Deer Valley and the Three Tomatoes Bistro in North Scottsdale, David brings a mix of his own compositions, as heard on his CD, “Bare Bones”; as well as a variety of pop, smooth jazz and classical tunes to an upbeat, positive presence. The first-rate quality if his live performances are nonetheless subtle enough to blend as background music, even if many feel that his skills and talent merit a more up-front stage.
