Well, here is part two of the songwriter''s diary, entitled, "A Songwriter''s Diary II"... short and sweet. And, man, does it reveal the pen of a songwriter! Raw musical motifs, a multitude of varied, arcing melodic ornamentations, polyrhythmic devices abounding, silky smooth harmonies, creeping up to adjuct melodic twists and turns, that echo such bands as early Genesis (back when it was cool to NOT over-produce the vocal, but rather, allow the singer to sound like a real person, relating his/her tale)...is what this album gives.
There are so many different styles on this album that even if you wanted an epic over-blown Asia album (remember those guys...great stuff, but way too much grandeur to take seriously!),you would still keep exploring the next track, simply out of the curiosity as to what this songwriter might had invented next to amuse us. Indeed, this album delivers all...all the nuance and subtle raw spirit that most artists prefer to sugar-coat away with $500,000.00 of state-of-the-art studio equipment. This album actually dazzles us with such a variety of textures, both delicate at times and sweet and soulful at other times, as well as being honest enough to reveal the artist in his studio, alone a a wet, wintry afternoon, alone with his musical ideas, and only desiring to note them in his aural diary...just that level...not a big studio production...and for this reason, this album is a breath of fresh air for those of us who still think the craft of songwriting is the real deal, and not the mega-studio production, instead. Every songwriter should be putting out A Songwriter''s Diary album every month...just to keep them honest and their feet on the ground. We can look forward to more songwriter''s diary entries in the future from Gregory Garrett...his pen (piano) and his notebook (multitrack recorder) or primed for much more!
