“Non-Fiction” is the highly anticipated debut release from Jazz guitarist and composer, Harley Card. The album features eight original compositions by the guitarist, performed by his quartet. The group consists of pianist Matt Newton, bassist Jon Maharaj and drummer Ethan Ardelli.
The album introduces Harley as a talented, emerging guitarist and presents eight unique and cleverly arranged pieces of music, boasting a promising compositional voice. Rooted in the Jazz tradition, the music demonstrates a rich understanding of harmony, rhythm, and form. Harley’s music also displays a keen Pop sensibility that sets him apart from a lot of modern Jazz that relies on melodic complexity.
The album goes back and forth between featuring Harley on electric guitar with his characteristic dark warm tone, and the shimmering sound of his steel string acoustic. Pianist, Matt Newton shines on grand piano and creates a wide palette of textures with the Fender Rhodes.
Harley Card:
Harley Card is a Toronto based guitarist and composer. He earned a diploma in Applied Music from Mohawk College in 2003 and a Bachelor Degree in Jazz performance from the University of Toronto in 2006.
Harley was recently awarded a popular music grant from the Ontario Art Council to record and self-produce his debut album entitled; “Non-Fiction”.
Harley studied with Phil Nimmons, David Occhipinti, Roy Patterson, Kirk Macdonald and Kevin Turcotte while attending the University of Toronto. He also played in the 10 o’clock Jazz orchestra lead by Paul Read in his fourth year and appears on the Orchestra’s latest CD; “Awakening”.
While enrolled in school for performance Harley was the recipient of several academic awards including; the Howl studio award in Jazz composition, a Millennium Scholarship and the Teachers Assistantship award. Harley performs regularly in Toronto and around southern Ontario, has performed as a sideman with Alex Dean and appears on Canadian Jazz vocalist/arranger; Sarah Jerrom’s critically acclaimed album; “Illuminations.” The album also features saxophonist and Canadian Jazz Icon; Mike Murley.

Matt Newton:
Matt Newton is a Toronto based pianist and composer. Matt graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music Jazz Program in 2004. Matt studied with Gary Williamson and David Braid while attending the University of Toronto. He has performed with Kevin Turcotte, Jim Vivian, Petr Cancura and Rob Frayne.

Ethan Ardelli:

Ethan Ardelli is a Toronto based drummer and freelance musician. Ethan’s reputation as a highly versatile and dynamic performer has lead to tours across Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia as a sideman with various artists. A recent graduate of the University of Toronto’s Jazz Program, Ethan has performed and/or recorded with David Virelles, Dave Young, Renee Rosnes, Neil Swainson, Emilie-Claire Barlowe, Nancy Walker, Kevin Turcotte, Mike Murley, Adrean Farrugia, Quinsin Nachoff, Matt Dusk and Richard Underhill.

In October 2005, Ethan was featured on Jane Bunnett''s latest, Juno award winning album; Radio Guantanemo: Guantanemo Blues Project Vol. 1. The album featured jazz legends; Dewey Redman and Howard Johnson. Ethan is also a member of the David Virelles Quintet. This group received the Grand Prix de Jazz at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in July 2006. The David Virelles Quintet’s debut album “Motion” is available on Justin Time Records and features New York saxophonist; Mark Turner.

Jon Maharaj:

Jon Maharaj has been playing professionally since the age of 16. He''s
performed and/or recorded with; Rez Abassi, Reg Schwager, Aaron Parks, Rob Piltch, Mike Murley, and Quinsin Nachoff. Since graduating from the University of Toronto''s Jazz program in 2003, Jon has become one of the most in demand bassists in Toronto for everything from Jazz, to Pop and studio work. He has held a teaching position at the innovative Humber Community Music School since 2003. Jon currently lives in New York City where he is studying with bassists; Drew Gress and Scott Colley with the assistance of a Study Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
