From the beginning, I fostered no illusions that The Fierce Lime and His Ponytail Assassins would be guilty of taking their music too seriously. What I didn''t expect was the band''s ability to mix just enough silliness into an album loaded with full-throttle rock energy. The lyrics get more amusing the more I listen to the 16 short tracks, but the energy in songs like "Holmes, The Heat Director" is what keeps me coming back. I''d love to see these guys live; if Modify The Engines is any indication, it would be one of those shows where the onstage heat leaves the crowd staggering and soaked with sweat. -Score! The Fierce Lime and his Ponytail Assassins, aka, Woosley Band, have created their finest record with MODIFY THE ENGINES. It''s songs are based on home electrical appliances given a role in Hell by an alcoholic who thinks he''s turning into Satan, only to discover that we''re all one and there is no end. Despite it being a highly-conceptual record, it''s not as weird as you would expect. Aside from it''s transcendental lyrical bursts, it''s, generally, as firmly grounded in the roots-rock sounds found on other Woosley Band records.
"Holmes, the Heat Director", an instant favorite of WB fans, finds the band in their most rocking, vitriolic mode. Contrast that to the spacious beauty of "Life Force Storm Troopers" and "Higher Planets". Although Woosley cites Joseph Campbell, Bill Hicks, Noam Chomsky and William Blake as influences that inspired this work, don''t let the high-minded concepts drag you down. This is an endlessly interesting and fun rock record.
