Lani Silver is a Holocaust Oral Historian, anti-racism educator and Women Studies teacher. Since l98l, Silver coordinated the gathering of l,700 interviews with l,400 Holocaust survivors. Currently, she is the Director of the James Byrd Jr. Racism Oral History Project, where 2,600 interviews on racism in America have been conducted. The project asks people to describe the impact racism has on their lives. This is the oral history project of the Byrd Foundation for Racial Healing. James Byrd Jr., who was dragged three miles through the outskirts of Jasper, Texas, chained to a truck by three white supremacists.
Silver was Steven Spielberg’s first consultant for his Shoah Foundation for Visual History. Spielberg conducted 54,000 testimonies with Holocaust survivors. Silver and military historian Eric Saul discovered the story of Chiune Sugihara, who is called “the Japanese Schindler.” Silver was one of five women named “Woman of the Year” by KQED in 2003.
Bill Spooner, co-writer and singer, is one of the founding members of the Tubes. He teaches songwriting at Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco. Spooner has several gold records for hits he penned, including "White Punks on Dope" and "Young and Rich". Spooner has won numerous Bammy Awards and been nominated for Grammy awards.
The song "I Refuse" is taken from the suicide note of Malachi Ritscher, a longtime activist from Chicago, who set himself on fire at a Chicago freeway entrance. He was protesting the Iraq War.
