Details:
Fiona Lehn''s latest release is this rockin'' cover of Joe Jackson''s classic Brit punk tune. Lehn remains true to Jackson''s original, and she adds her trademark vocal arrangements, vocals recorded through a shortwave radio, and a theramin. Read on to learn about Lehn and the process of recording "On Your Radio."

Described as "Half folkie, half alt-rock goddess" by one critic, and "a rebel in her own realm," by another, Fiona Lehn continues to make music all her own. Lehn has released 4 recordings on her own label, Droidfingers Music Company, and has quickly become known for candid performances, clever wordplay, and passionate ideals.

In the mid-90''s, Lehn often played with her band, fondly called FLUB (Fiona Lehn Underground Band), and she also promoted herself solo across the US, gaining radio airplay, hip reviews, and hundreds of fans. In 1997, Billboard Magazine raved about Lehn''s "Waiting for Dogot." A 5-song EP of various musical styles, One for Me, was born in 2001. A year later, Lehn was awarded the FACTOR Professional Songwriting Demo Grant. Recently, she finished her first novel, which is currently under consideration for publication. Lehn will be releasing her next full-length album in 2005.

"On Your Radio" was first demo-ed by Lehn as a submission to a Joe Jackson tribute CD being put together by a small label called Skipping Discs. By the time her song was selected to be on the CD, Lehn had fallen in love with the song and with much of Joe Jackson''s music. In fact, Lehn says if she hadn''t submitted a song to Skipping Discs, she would never have discovered the true genius of Joe Jackson. She grew up in the small agricultural community of Stockton, California, and was raised primarily by her father, a classical cellist. The most Joe Jackson she''d ever heard there was a mainstream hit or two, like "Is She Really Going Out with Him" and "Steppin'' Out." She''d never dreamed that Jackson wrote about social constructs and gender issues, two of her own main themes, nor would she have guessed he''d had a punk era, much less a jazz era!

Lehn''s cover of Joe Jackson''s "On Your Radio" is a tribute to all who push on towards their dreams, despite others who try to hold them back. Lehn thanks Joe Jackson for writing the song, as she has found it to be very therapeutic, and she feels others will too.

THE RECORDING of LEHN''S COVER OF ON YOUR RADIO:

Thanks for tuning in! Here''s an introduction to the making of "On Your Radio." This is for the geeks in the audience, mainly, but anyone can check this out. It''s kind of interesting, even if you aren''t a geek!

After looking at the lyrics of all Joe Jackson''s songs on the web, I bought several of his CDs to check out the songs whose lyrics I liked. I''m a lyric kinda person so that''s the way I work. I discovered that Joe Jackson''s lyrics are amazing and that he has explored societal constructs and gender roles, as I have as well. I felt instantly bonded to his words and couldn''t wait to hear the music. Two songs really resonated with me, lyrically and musically: "Different for Girls" and "On Your Radio." So we decided to make a demo of each, send them to Skipping Discs and see what happened.

I learned the songs, altered the lyrics slightly for a female singer, and chose the proper keys for my voice. Then I made charts and recorded a ruff demo with just me and my guitar and gave them to Kelly Stodola, THE drummer. We went out to Vogville Studio, in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada one day in late January, through miles and miles of wind and snow and ice, and the sled dogs got really tired, and -- oh, no wait. Actually, we were just outside of Vancouver. But it was raining, and Kelly had the sniffles, as I recall.

Anyway, Kelly played drums for both songs. He plays Gretsch drums and his website is at https://www.tradebit.com. Paul Shatto engineered, played bass and produced. Paul plays a white bass! We recorded onto ProTools in 24-bit, 44.1k, through an SSL board. (For those who wanna know, I think it''s a G Series. The computer is a Grey and White -- a G4 something or other).

Then MMO came in and did the rockin'' guitars one day in early February. He played a Godin guitar and used a sansamp, and his website is https://www.tradebit.com. When I heard the guitar work with the bass and drums on "On Your Radio," I was so excited. The song was really taking shape, and it was rowdy. I loved it! But "Different for Girls" really needed keyboards, and for various reasons, lack of time and funds included, we decided to continue on with only "Radio."

Because Vogville is a busy place, we could only get in on one weekend in late February to do vocals. I had arranged the vocals previously and made a rough demo and a chart of all the parts, but I had also been sick for two weeks, and when our recording weekend came, I still sounded like a frog. We just got levels and a feel for the song on the first day, and then I came home and went to bed.

On the second day we got started bright and early, and though I felt optimistic, I didn''t sound very much like me. But I think it worked in my favor, as my gruff performance really suited the song! We got the leads and bgs done in half a day, and in the afternoon, we brought in Dan Kibke with his amazing radio gear. Dan''s site is https://www.tradebit.com.

He brought in a short wave and an FM transmitter that he had built himself, and a theramin, and more gadgets than I can name. We ran my recorded vocals through the transmitter and recorded them again. This created our trademark "On Your Radio" vocal effect. We also recorded his theramin and static and lots of the sound effects you hear on the song if you listen closely. Paul and I edited it all in. It was great geeky fun, and we love the final effects!

Paul did a rough mix and we sent it in to Skipping Discs. Fingers crossed, we almost died of suspense, and then we got the word that we were in! Paul mixed the song out at Vogville, and he mastered it on Pro Tools as well. And there you have it. The making of an indie release! Thanks for listening, and enjoy . . . Fiona
