Mamady Keïta was born in 1950 in Balandougou (Guinea), a village in the Wassolon region of North Eastern Guinea. He began playing the djembe, traditional Malinke drum, at the age of 2 and by the time he was 5 was accompanying the local Master drummer at traditional celebrations. He was initiated into the secrets of the djembe at age 7 and was then recruited at age 13 to play in Guinea''s renowned National Ballet Djoliba with whom he travelled the globe for the next 23 years. In 1988 he moved to Belgium and formed his premier percussion ensemble "Sewa Kan", featuring traditional rhythms and songs of the Mandeng. In 1991, he opened his school of Mandeng percussion, called Tam Tam Mandingue, which now has 13 branches around the world.
