Michael Chorney is best known in his native Vermont as a band-leader and composer. His past projects include the nine-piece touring group viperHouse, Magic City, The Seven Deadly Sins, a host of one-off special events and a discography that includes 17 of his own records and several more as a sideman.
In 2003 Michael returned to his original instrument and became engaged in acoustic music - first with a recording of arrangements of the music of Paul Bowles for guitar and voice and then as producer and collaborater with Anais Mitchell on her acclaimed release “Hymns for the Exiled”. Their collaboration has much to do with Michael new-found interest in the art of song.
In 2006 Michael released his first album of original songs. “Mother Tongue” contains narrative character studies and imagistic musings sung and performed in an intimate, evocative style that The Burlington Free Press calls“quietly powerful”. Seven Days said "It''s always a treat to hear what Chorney''s up to but I wouldn''t have predicted his latest turn... it''s like Raymond Carver moonlighting as a backwoods folkie." Disillusioned love via James Joyce, cultural displacement, a fathers bitter thoughts on the war, russian poets are all drawn with an inviting directness. Solo concerts feature a mixture of these songs, rarities by other artists - prepared guitar.
