The Symphony Number Six – The Autumnal
The Symphony Number Six; The Autumnal was started in the Autumn of 2007. It is a depiction of the ending of things, and perhaps the beginning of new things. It is an ominous piece, with the third movement being the only light part of the work. The fourth movement especially, is filled with foreboding and worry. It is entirely disproportionate to the rest of the work. The first movement approaches the fourth in length, but not in scope of thematic material. As is typical of Ende''s works, the first three movements give the listener no idea as to the content of the fourth or fifth movements of her works. Her final movements tend to be very dramatic, as if the preceding movements were only some sort of dress rehearsal.
Movement One - The Dynamics of Youth
The first movement starts in a shimmering manner with strings and horns announcing some lofty ideas; perhaps the innocence, or naivite'' of youth.
Movement Two - The Romantic Battles
The second movement is an exploration of the battlefield we call love and romance. The mystery, the starts and stops, the fireworks (as illustrated by snare and field drum)
Movement Three - The Celebration of Life
Movement three is a waltz. A short romp for the orchestra to clear the pallette and let everyone know that the wonder of life is acknowledged here.
Movement Four - The Gathering Darkness
"And comes the gathering darkness..." from which there is no escape. As the twilight of life creeps in, we see the arc of our life and the brilliance of its content, yet we see an impending unknowable and we are afraid. – Ende
