His vocals have been compared to the likes of Donovan, Yorke and even Garfunkel, but Nick is pretty modest when it comes to such comparisons. “I always listened to much daggier stuff than that when I was growing up. I think that’s been more influential than anyone I might sound like”. Nick refers to the likes of The Carpenters, Dalida or The Springfields.
Nick took a while to get things going musically. It wasn’t until his mid twenties that a ‘bandless’ Nick decided to head into the studio with the best session players he could find (courtesy of Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea) to record his debut EP ‘Close’. After listening to Nick’s home demo recordings, Ross Calia agreed to take on the role of co-producer and engineer. The outcome was ‘Close’ - a well received EP, garnering great reviews and event some community radio play across the country.
Goodnight Thomas (the name coming to Nick courtesy of a dream) came together soon after the EP was complete and the first inception of Goodnight Thomas finally took to the stage in September 2006, launching the EP at the Northcote Social Club.
The band has now established itself as one of the finer folk rock outfits of the musically rich North Melbourne suburbs. Performing at Australian festivals such as The Yackandandah Folk Festival, Melbourne’s Midsumma, The Chill-Out Festival, The Spring Migration and CERES Harvest festival, the band has been playing regularly since their inception. Local performances at The Northcote Social Club, The East Brunswick Club and Manchester Lane have also been well received, particularly by the great musicians like Tim Rogers, Rebecca Barnard, Tobias Cummings and Tim McMillan that they’ve shared the stage with.
Based in Northcote, Goodnight Thomas now find themselves working harder than ever, maintaining their live presence, while recording songs for their second EP (scheduled for release in 2008). A regional tour is also in the planning, which will take in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
