Welcome to the world of the Poltergeist, an up & coming rap artist and producer from Los Angeles, CA who is determined to make noise through his style of music. Some of his aliases are – Rara Avis and Left Hand Finesse. When asked what these names mean, he states, “Well, starting out, The Poltergeist means a ghost that makes noisy disturbances. I felt that this name fitted me perfectly because I’m mostly a quiet person at times, but when I get in the mode, I can get lively with energy and get animated. But there’s nothing like the feeling of expressing myself through my beats; I try to make energetic beats and music that has emotion to it.
Rara Avis mean a rare bird or someone who is rarely encountered. So I use it as a symbolic meaning for being rare and different. Also for being successful despite all the people who have doubt and despite all the obstacles in the music industry and in life just in general. Left Hand Finesse is just a catchy way of saying that I’m left-handed and I’m creative when it comes to writing my lyrics. I sometimes go by the name South Paw Lyric Boxer, but I don’t use it strongly”.
He was first inspired to write at 12 yrs. old. by his brother. Not being a very talkative kid, he would go in his bedroom alone with a small tape cassette player to write and listen to music. He would record songs and let his friends hear it and they''d give positive feedback. Even though he would be at all the ciphers and rap battles, he would never get in the circle and test his skills. Instead, he would just listen. Initially, he didn''t plan on composing beats, but one day, he was introduced to the free version of Fruity Loops, and then to Reasons 3.0. As he got older, he continued to stay focused on music despite growing up in the rough streets of South Central Los Angeles. Instead of choosing a life that leads many young African-Americans to life in prison or death, he stayed focused on music and was fortunate enough to have the help of some key people in his life that had a greater influence on him, which kept him on a positive path toward success.
Currently, The Poltergeist is trying hard to promote his newly released independent debut album titled: “We ‘Bout to Get This Money”. All of the album’s tracks were produced and recorded, literally, by him within in the confines of his bedroom while he was finishing up his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Cal. State Dominguez Hills. “The album was a working process, which started back in 2005 when I first started doing beats. I really like to take my time with my music and listen to it over and over in order to perfect it”, the Poltergeist stated. He has nicely blended this album with valuable messages that are relevant to the masses as well as with familiar topics that everyone can identify with. He seems very determined to raise the bar and he believes 100% that he has what it takes to continuously provide listeners with high-quality production, style, and content that will challenge mainstream rap music. There is no doubt that his album can be placed on the radio and be marketed internationally. When listening to his music, it seems difficult to categorize his style because the production and vibe of the album uses a mixture of areas throughout the U.S. and different artist styles and vibes ranging from the Down South on ‘What U Talkin’, the Bay Area on ‘Where U At’, a trace of Eminem on ‘Hurry Up’ and ‘Mental Revolution’, Dr. Dre 2001 on ‘What U Need’, and Will Smith on ‘Summertime’.
He has been going around to different locations in the streets attempting to sell his album, but has been frequently turned down by potential consumers. The Poltergeist strongly proclaims, “I know it’s only the beginning, but it’s hard when you actually have all these high expectations about grinding and selling big on the streets, then you run into a brick wall especially with your own people. I mean within the first week, I was ready to quit, but I know I can’t stop because there are different ways to get through the door, and when I do, everybody will catch on”. On this album, The Poltergeist has only one up & coming female singer/rapper, his girlfriend, Charm from Inglewood, CA. She’s definitely determined to beat the odds and help bring back good music. You can hear her singing on ‘We ‘Bout to Get This Money’ or rapping on ‘What U Need’. The Poltergeist is working on her album as well. The Poltergeist already has beats and concepts for his next two albums, so he’s definitely aiming to stay in the game and draw attention with his hits. He says that his first independent album is “part of a bigger plan to start something new in the music industry and get into other business ventures”. On the ‘We ‘Bout to Get This Money’, he raps “We only tryna’ get as much as we can, get houses and get mo’ money w/ no problems / we different / you plot 5 yrs in advance / we plot, with a hundred year business plan”.
He is definitely on his way to becoming a highly sought-after music producer and artist. He has interests outside of music such as: scriptwriting, acting, movie directing, and real estate investments, among many other things. His drive is highly self-motivated, yet his music influences are Dr. Dre, Chamillionaire, Method Man, Ice Cube, Timbaland, Neptunes, E-40, and Eminem. The reason why his music on this album is different than many artists is because he has a unique way of blending valuable and inspirational messages along with familiar messages in his music. Familiar and inspirational in the sense of incorporating topics of being on the grind, making money, hustling, and still being in the clubs partying and having fun, but at the same time, the importance of African-Americans uniting, networking, and working together inside and outside of the music industry. Overall, he tries his best not to speak about things that he never experienced in life; hence the name of the album – We ‘Bout to Get This Money (he hasn’t made the money, and doesn’t have the money, so why talk about actually having it). He believes strongly that his music is thoughtful and worth listening to, so don’t sleep on him. The Poltergeist is comin’.
