For years I’ve been trying to write my own bio but I always thought it sounded corny. It occurred to me that maybe it sounded corny because I try to write it in the 3rd person. So, in the interest of keeping with the theme of my new album, Just Me, I’m going to try something new, still write it myself, but do it in 1st person.

I was born in 1978 in Columbus, Ohio, to Philip and Barbara Newman. I’ve been singing and performing for as long as I can remember. Neither of my parents were officially in show business, psychology actually, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t performers. The same goes for my brothers, Sam and Abe. My house was always filled with music and entertainment and was an incredibly supportive environment for a young artist.

It was in 1997 that I fronted my first official band, Groove Street. We did a teeny-weeny bit of recording, but it wasn’t until I got to New York City, in 1998, that I really found out what it meant to be a recording artist, as opposed to just being a performer.

The first 5 years in NYC were spent trying to figure out what I was doing. I hadn’t written many of my own songs, I didn’t think I was that special at the guitar and I really couldn’t play and sing at the same time. I worked a bunch of different jobs, fell in love, went back to school, kept writing, and kept playing.

During this time I played with some different folks. I jammed with the Keller Brothers, Mike and Steve Keller. I also played rhythm guitar for a wonderful talent, Tara Lynne, of the Tara Lynne Band for a couple of years.

In 2001, I met my first musical soul mate, a composer/producer named Dustin Young, and we created a project called Junkyard Cutiepie (JYCP). In 2003, JYCP put out an album of the same name that combined my organic, folksy style with Dustin’s structured, melodic and rhythmic technology.

Because of the slow moving nature and random pattern of successes in the music business, there were several times when I doubted whether being a musician was my true path. Enough times that I put a lot of energy into the work I was doing to support myself and my music, which, funny enough, was producing live events.

Producing events is the only other profession that I have come across that I can engage in anywhere near as much as making music. As luck would have it, I’m good at it too. In 2006, my business partner, Jim Striebich, and I created 11th Hour Productions, LLC. It has been because of the success of 11th Hour and the continued support of my partner, that I’ve been able to write, record, produce and distribute Just Me, my first solo album.

The collection of songs on Just Me was written over the course of the past few years and reflects this time of exploration, inquiry and realization in aspects of my life such as: love, spirituality, friendship, identity and more. These melodies and stories are the light that finally showed me who I am. There are some things that are a choice in this life; if you’re a musician, making music isn’t one of them.
