Band: Teachers'' Lounge
Album: Farewell

Bio: No, they’re not all teachers. They might have been originally, but no one remembers anymore. Somehow the name stuck through the comings and goings that are part of any rock band worth its salt. Hey, the Rolling Stones aren’t stones and the Beatles aren’t beetles, and Snoop is not actually a dog, whatever style he may prefer. And besides, the Teachers’ Lounge is a place not a person, and you probably never got to see it until now.

The Loungers that made the album, Farewell, are five individual musicians who have gathered together over the last three years to create a coherent sound all their own. Chris, a founding member, is guitar-player, singer, and songwriter. Mostly it’s acoustic guitar, but Donovan he’s not. He plays it like a rocker, with a brash and sometimes dirty sound that owes as much to John Lee Hooker as Dave Matthews. If that’s not enough, he writes songs in which 70s art-rock meets 90s funk. Curtis, well he’s the drummer. He’s been drumming since he could hold a stick. When he started he was a natural, and he’s only gotten better. He holds the band together with solid rhythms and tasty fills. He also plays harp, sings, and can make great percussion with anything you could dig out of your kitchen drawer. He contributes a tune to the album, a bluesy number that will surely have you on your feet. Jeff plays bass. He’s a versatile, classically trained musician, who plays French horn in some of the area’s classical ensembles and concert bands. But for TL, he dusted off his bass, which he used to play in jazz clubs for loose change back in the day. Now he’s hawking rock n’ roll and has helped the band to polish its groove thing. Think Ron Carter meets John Entwistle. Deana’s actually a teacher, and a music teacher at that. She has helped the band to define itself as the only French Horn-based rock band in the known musical universe. Before Deana, there was the intro to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and that was pretty much it. She’s brought things to a whole new level, and she sings too. She’s contributed lead and harmony vocals since she joined the band in Fall 03. Tom’s a typical nerd that dreamt of rock stardom. In other words, he plays keyboard. He thinks Professor Longhair is an actual professor, and he’s got a framed picture of Thelonious Monk hanging on his dining room wall. He also sings, and wrote some songs about crime, death, a bad meal, and other uplifting stuff like that. Along with Chris, he is a founding member of the band.

Teachers’ Lounge... well, they aren’t sure how to describe themselves. They’re just five musicians, each with a unique musical history and style, who found a wrinkled up old map that they’ve been trying to follow to the heart of rock n’ roll.
