Celtic Journey
Take a trip on the panoramic "Celtic Journey”. Like a swan glide gracefully across the waters of "Llyn Y Fan". Walk on the wild and windy shores of “Cefn Sidan” or become a monk for a day at “Machynys” (monks island)”. Whatever impressions you get from the atmospheric yet melodic music of Telyneg there is no doubt that this original instrumental music is definitely 21st century Celtic. However, Telyneg’s music still successfully evokes the myths and legends of the Welsh and Celtic people and their heritage, whilst remaining fresh and modern.
Celtic Music – Form, Melody and Rhythm
The musical skills of Robert (a wind specialist) and Paul (a guitar specialist) successfully complement each other on these complex, weaving arrangements which like a Celtic knot still retain a strong sense of form with memorable melodic passages. These are held together by their keyboard/synthesizer arrangements and strong sense of rhythm using liberal doses of drums and percussion.
Telyneg’s pioneering past
Telyneg has a long musical association from founding members and music arrangers of the pioneering 70''s and 80''s Celtic folk band "Carraig Aonair", through "Ji-Binc", writing music for BBC television plays including "Rita", producing on albums for Gwerin Records, and on to the "Telyneg" project. With the old line-up Paul and Robert produced 2 albums which included music from Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Isle of Man and Brittany. One of the trademarks of the old band was the use of a wide variety of acoustic and electric instruments as well as one of the first folk bands to use synthesizers.
TV, Radio and Stadium Folk
Carraig Aonair made numerous radio and television appearances and appeared with well known artists such as the Bothy Band and Jake Thackery. They were chosen twice by the BBC to represent Wales in the InterCeltic festival in Lorient, Brittany, where they appeared with Joan Baez, Alan Stivell and Silly Wizard among others in stadium concerts. The albums were recorded on the Gwerin label and as with Telyneg took the many influences of the Celtic countries and contained electric and acoustic styles. These acoustic styles have echoes of classical music which probably formed from Robert and Paul’s classical training at music college. Their music also has been used as theme and incidental music extensively on radio and television and Canadian film.
Eisteddfod, TV and the Present
Paul and Robert composed, arranged and recorded tracks for the Telyneg album - Celtic Impressions for release during the National Eisteddfod Of Wales in August 2000. Some of the titles reflect a local link including Cefn Sidan and Machynys. Since its original release, tracks from the Telyneg album have been used on TV and radio. Recently tracks from Telyneg - Celtic Impressions have been used in a number of Television programmes including BBC 2 Scotland''s Primetime "Cuairt Luchd Turais" and various independent films including "The Edge Of Wales". A choral arrangement of Cefn Sidan was recorded on the CD "Cefn Sidan" by Cor Glannau''r Gwendraeth with lyrics by Margaret Morgan.
Rounding Off with Influence
Robert and Paul have never been afraid to experiment with their music but have always had a soft spot for their roots. However, their influences are many - Paul having played and composed songs in numerous Rock Bands and Robert having played and arranged for many Jazz groups. I think that much of this has rubbed off in the music of Telyneg and I hope you will agree that they have produced something of quality that is a little bit different from the norm.
