The first thing you notice when you encounter Tom Prible is his boyish charm. But underneath the unassuming, shy smile is a passionate musician, trying to make sense of life through soul-searching lyrics and rhythmic melodies.
Prible began writing and performing songs in high school with some friends in his hometown of Carmel, Indiana. Throughout high school and college, music was among Prible’s top priorities. Yet he admits that as real life settled in, he put his songwriting on the back burner while he concentrated on his career and his marriage with wife, Michele.
Three daughters later and more life experience to boot, Prible is rediscovering his lost love. He has recently recorded his first full-length album backed by a band of talented and diverse musicians.
“There is something exciting about playing my music with others. Something energizing. There’s a connection there as we play,” Prible says, “And that’s what I hope my songs do- provide a connection with others who can relate to the lyrics or stories I tell.”
The track “Mountains” is one such song. Prible writes honestly about his insecurity as an artist:
Still I feel somewhat unassured in picking up this pen,
Trying to compose a song again.
Mountains move by faith, not mere words,
So what can I say, that would be worth being heard?
“‘Mountains’ was basically my attempt to sort through who I am as a songwriter,” says Prible, “When I was younger, I was impressed by guys who could cleverly play on words. But I came to a point where I realized that nothing I say is really worth being heard; it’s more about who I am and how I live.”
It’s that humility and willingness to be vulnerable that draws fans to Prible’s music. He claims his writing is nothing new, necessarily. Just honest and genuine.
“I’m seeking to make sense of life and to be truthful about what life is like for me,” he explains, “If I am genuine-both in my lyrics and in who I am as a human being- maybe I can encourage others to think honestly about their lives and who they want to be.”
Prible’s lyrics derive from his own experiences as well as his faith. An avid reader and a fan of author Frederick Buechner, Prible strives to write in the same vein, in a way where he is true to himself and to the God who created him.
Prible says his songs do not express a sugar-coated faith. Rather, his lyrics are apt to grapple with doubt and struggle as much as they convey faith and hope. The first to admit he doesn’t have all the answers, Prible says he sorts through the questions as he goes. A refreshing alternative to the many songs containing lyrics wrapped in neat packages with choruses spouting trite answers like a bow tied perfectly on top.
“I find sacred space when I am alone in a quiet room with my guitar and I toss around a word or phrase that has been churning in my mind,” Prible explains of his songwriting process. “I want to make something that’s relevant, something of substance-of meaning-that will speak to others.”
In ‘28 Years Old’, Prible portrays a life that is not always clear, no matter how old you are:
28 years old,
Starting down this road,
And I see clearly
I cannot see my way
28 years old,
And baffled by my soul
Who I want so bad to be,
And who I am today.
The song continues to describe the longing people have for something more, the longing to find meaning and purpose in the midst of daily life. Yet Prible admits he doesn’t take himself too seriously. “Most of the artists that influence me are sincere, but they are witty too,” he explains.
With his bent toward reflection and depth coupled with heartfelt, catchy tunes, Prible draws a fan base that transcend age and background. It’s no wonder Tom Prible is a musician on the rise, an artist to watch in coming months.
