From the harder rock ‘Taste and See’, to the energetic ‘Alive’ and the intimate lyrics of ‘Holy’, this rock worship CD has appeal for all audiences who desire a worship experience. You can really hear Chris’s influences throughout the CD, with the Sting sounding ‘Amazed’ and ‘Never Alone’ to the piano driven songs ‘Be My Bride’ and ‘Calling Your Love’ reminiscent of Billy Joel. Chris’s vocal style makes him unique from other worship leaders, having a distinctive flavor and great control to his voice. The musicianship is stunning, exceptional in the genre of Worship. With ‘On and On’s’ rippin guitar solo to the unique drum groove in ‘All of my Life’, Chris Updegraft gets it. Chris has proven he “has the music” ability within and shares it “out loud”.
There are moments on this cd that do have a “drag”, but will have a sensational feel in a live setting. Overall, though, it is a remarkable worship record with honesty and conviction interspersed throughout the lyrics and music. The production is a breath of fresh air. You feel as if you are sitting there in the studio with him, listening spellbound, as this cd takes on a life of its own.
There are a few songs such as ‘Cry for Revival’ and ‘War’ that don’t seem to bring much to the record and a few lyrics that are a bit cliche. But beyond that it is is a very good mix of emotional and positive rock songs. It is a journey of self-discovery, surrender and thankfulness to Jesus Christ. ‘Calling Your Love’ offers a whole new perspective for those who desire to praise and worship. It gives you the chance to freely have fun and rock out without losing the message in the music and the desire to truly worship the Creator. “Kudos” to Chris Updegraft for transporting his talent to the genre of Independent Christian Music. I’ll be one of the customer’s in line eagerly anticipating his next release!
