Details:
Elliott James grew up around baby boomer rock musicians. That''s his explanation of why his music always comes out the way it does. "I learned a lot about playing from the older guys at a real young age," he says. "Then I learned to write songs by listening to The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, and so on."

He was playing piano by age six, drums by age seven, guitar by age nine, and an assortment of other instruments over the following sixteen years. His songs, on any given album, can range from pulsing rockers reminiscent of Crazy Horse, to acoustic tunes that sound like they were written, then hidden for later discovery, in 1964. Yet the album is cohesive, clever, and just different enough to be interesting to any audience, any age, any listener. "That''s the trick," he says. "You have to struggle against filler songs, pick only the ones you really think are good, then dispense with what doesn''t fit the album as a complete piece of art. It can be painful, but if you want to make a great album, you have to do it. I usually record twenty or twenty-five songs for an album, then pick the twelve or fifteen that make the best complete thought."

Whatever his methods are, they work, and they inspire. "I don''t just want listeners to hear it and want to keep hearing it," he adds. "I want songwriters to hear it, and to want to write better songs than we are exposed to through modern radio."

We can only hope. In the meantime, Elliott James is writing and making albums that rank with the best. His debut solo album is every bit as good as the one made with his band, "The Resophonics." "Writing and recording is a thing I could not possibly stop. There''ll be an album a year, at least, from me. And probably one from The Resophonics as well. Then hopefully we''ll get some other bands who are willing to make the kind of effort it takes to write truly good tunes."

He says good songs don''t have to lack energy, and the title of Elliott''s album is a testament to that. "Have Much Energy" has plenty, and enough depth and talent to keep one listening for years to come.
