REGGAE: Roots Reggae, WORLD: African

Details:
orn Abey Julian Abey in the little town of Widikum in the Momo Division of the North West Province of Cameroon. Julian Abey chose music as his way of life. Although his first album is coming out at a time when some musicians are past their prime, Julian Abey''s debut album brings with it the maturity that comes with age.
To get to this point, Julian Abey''s upbringing by his grand mother in a rural African setting shaped his thoughts and his look on life. He was later on moved to Douala to live with his family that had just returned from the USA. His father, a music lover, had large collections of songs of all genres and Abey Abey was thus exposed to the music world. His heart went out for reggae music, and he never turned his back from it, ever. For him to become a true songwriter, he chose to study Philosophy and English Literature in the renowned CCAST high school in Bambili, Cameroon. It is here that he had the opportunity to try his songs and his voice on the stage. The response by his fellow students was enthusiastic.

Julian attributes this modest debut in the show business to his secondary school teachers of PSS Mankon and Mountain View College Muea who gave him the faith, the confidence and the hope to live and pursue his life''s dreams. After obtaining a pass in his end of course examinations at the GCE Advanced Level Examinations, Julian obtained diplomas in Marketing and Business Management and Administration with the aim of working in his father''s successful retail business, where he spent time working before he moved to the USA. His experiences working in his father''s business exposed him to another part of life. He learnt the simple but neglected lesson of discipline, that of the mind and the spirit, that of the business world—that they have similar tenets. So when Julian Abey moved to the United States, he came along with him the dream to live the American dream and make the best of what opportunity America can provide.

In Chicago where he lived, Julian Abey was soon to join a group of musicians whose multifarious backgrounds from Haiti, Africa and the Americas would have provided a great step in his quest to achieve his dreams of playing. This was not to be. The group disbanded and, in his frustrations, Julian moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he played in bars and restaurants. Although this took away the steam and the frustrations, the dream of producing an album was his ultimate goal. His move to Atlanta, Georgia, was timely as his debut album can testify.

The album tells his story and that of many others in similar backgrounds and situations—That is the way life is, Disgrace, Freedom, Mandela, Face your Fears are among a repertoire of the songs that Julian Abey showcases in this first album.
