Details:
Phillip Charette is an Oregon resident of Alaskan Native and French Canadian descent. He is a well-known artist who honors his Yup’ik culture through his music and art.

A Harvard graduate, Phillip left his career in education and began work as a full-time artist in 2001, when he established his art business featuring authentic contemporary Yup''ik art. Phillip, also known to the Yup’ik people as Aarnaquq (“the dangerous one”), is a member of the Yupiit Nation in Southwestern Alaska. He is a widely recognized artist known for his mixed-media sculptures, which are contemporary renditions of ancient Yup’ik masks. His work has been in the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in New York, and the Eiteljorg, Heard, Hallie Ford, Washington State History, and Bishop Museums. In 2006, Phillip was honored with the Artists Choice award for one of his sculptures at the Sante Fe Indian Art Market. He has a piece on permanent display in the Portland Art Museum and has two large pieces on tour with the Changing Hands 2: Art Without Reservation exhibit. Phillip has been featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Oregon Art Beat” for both his art and music.

In 1997, Phillip began making Native wooden flutes. He has since mastered the art of making his own style of concert quality Native American flutes in hardwoods and low fire clays, specializing in large bass flutes. Phillip writes his own songs and has been performing for six years. He is a member of The International Native American Flute Association.

The CD was recorded at Big Woody Studios, Sun Valley Recording Company, Sun Valley, Idaho, owned by Bruce Innes, former member of “The Original Caste,” known for their 1972 hit single “One Tin Soldier,” Joe Fritsch, a mutual acquaintance of Charette and Innes, brought the two together because he believed that Phillip’s music “was so inspiring it had to be recorded.” All songs on the CD were written, arranged, and performed by Phillip (except Tarvarnauramken, a traditional healing song, and Amazing Grace by John Newton).

More information on Phillip’s art and music can be found at his website, https://www.tradebit.com, as can information and fees regarding performances and lectures. For inquiries regarding performances, CD sales, or art sales, contact Phillip Charette or Elizabeth Estabrooks at 541-523-7563.
