About 6 years ago in Clinton, MA, while sitting around drinking some coors, Tom came up with the idea that he wanted to start a Jug Band. Calling first upon his brother Justin and their long-time friend Rob, they started playing around with old songs that they didn''t think anyone in MA listened to. Of course you cant have a Jug band without a jug, that is where their musically challanged friend Jaymo came into play... but it wasn''t meant to be... considering they had no jug, they threw a washboard on him and told him to scratch that itch.
Everyone knows a jug band NEEDS a jug, so finally they threw enough financing down ($20.00) and purchased a jug off of ebay, asking their large lunged friend Cletus (is that really his name?) if he would so kindly play in their band, he accepted. Having most of their jug band formed, they were missing one key ingredient... a washtub bass of course. Living upstairs from Tom was his best friend Toby. Not wanting anything to do with Toms band, he fought tooth and nail till one day he was conned into trying it, and has since been on of the, if not the, best washtub players this side of the Mississippi... Hence the formation of Thunderpants Johnson''s Hillbilly Orchestra.
But Wait, there is more. Convinced that they weren''t crowded enough on stage. One night while at the Nashua Gardens, they met a mandolin player named Chris Phair. So the band asked Chris if he would like to occupy the last 2 feet that remained on the stage, not knowing what he was getting himself into, so politely obliged the offer and has since been wrapped up in the TPJ madness.
The final piece of the puzzle came in 2006. While playing a show in Sanford, ME, the band met Chris Parent. Chris sat in on upright bass, and has remained a member of TPJHO ever since. Chris plays a mean bass, and man can he play it mean!
Chris filled a hole left by long-time Thunderpants bass player Toby Morilly. Toby is currently doing a stint in a correctional facility in Framingham.
Seeing a Thunderpants show is definitely a unique experience. From seeing the musicianship of 4 long time players, to the rambling around antics of the other 3, the un relentless drinking on stage between songs, and the tom foolery performed on stage, you are sure to remember your first Jug Band Experience.
