Urbnergy represents creative efforts spanning almost three years. The ensemble is comprised of three free-lance musicians dedicated to the pursuit of personal musical endeavors while maintaining full-time professional obligations. Urbnergy is hopefully the first of what will be a continuing release of our musical efforts. Comments are welcome and encouraged. Please use our myspace message center to contact us. Marc Irwin on piano has performed and recorded with Harry Belafonte(1983-88), The Sauter-Finnegan Big Band, the great jazz trumpeter Tom Harrell, Lawrence Feldma(reeds), Keith O’Quinn(trombone) and has soloed and conducted for The Three Mo’ Tenors. 1985 and 1988, along with guitarist Dan Carillo
(Harry Belafonte and Tania Maria) Marc released two jazz cds for Iris Records, Crossings Of The Spirit and A Child’s Play. He released a solo piano recording, Suite For My Father in 1997. His Broadway credits (1977-1992) include Sunday In The Park With George, with Bernadette Peters and Mandi Patinkin, Romance, Romance, with Scott Bakula and Cy Coleman’s jazz/pop musical, City Of Angels. He was assistant musical director at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in 1998 for the Words and Music Festival, in Bells Are Ringing with Faith Prince and Purlie with Stephanie Mills and in 2002 for Celebrating Sondheim in Merrily We Roll Along. Dr. Irwin received a Doctorate in Composition from the Peabody Conservatory in 2000.
Marty Confurius on bass started his career in NYC in the middle sixties playing guitar in greenwich village clubs during the height of the hippie generation and the anti war movement. After graduating Hunter college, where he studied with the legendary bassist Milt Hinton, he became involved in the recording and jazz scene in New York. He co-led a jazz group with Curtis Boyd (Billy Taylor) which featured trumpetist Richard Williams and saxophonist Jerry Niewood while touring with the legendary western swing band The Central Park Shieks. In 1977 Marty joined Andy Statman in recording Flatbush Waltz, (four stars in Downbeat Magazine), this led to a ten year stint with Andy which resulted in four more recordings and led to further involvement in the klezmer, bluegrass and world music scene. In 1991, Marty assumed the role of Taxim Arco in the New York production of the hit musical, Song Of Singapore. Recently Marty has appeared with the Klezmatics, Alicia Svigals, Greg Wall and the Hassidic New Wave, The Yiddish Radio Project, Kapelye, The Youngers of Zion, Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna- Jefferson Airplane), David Aaron, Jonny on the Rocks and has recorded with The Wayfaring Strangers (Shifting Sands of Time w/ Tim O''Brian), Tony Trishcka (Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular with Steve Martin), Adrianne Greenbaum (Fleytmusik), Marty Laster (Sound Mosaics), The Nikolayev Kapeliah(Vodkazak), David Aaron (12:00 Scenery), and the premiere recording of "Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys". Lately, Marty is revisiting his love of improvising with long time associates Marc Irwin and Don Mulvaney in the trio Urbanergy and has recently finished a recording with The Top Drur band featuring vocalist Loreen Peer, saxaphonist Drur Ben Gur and pianist Yaron Gershovsky. Marty is available for all types of general business gigs including bar mitvahs, brisses, school openings, bar openings, fish frys, your garden variety wedding, debutante balls and whore house parties.
Don Mulvaney, on drums is a professional musician who has performed with many top names such as Tony Bennett, Itzhak Perlman, Barbra Streisand, Maureen McGovern, jazz singer Mark Murphy, Melissa Manchester, Bill Frisell and Mike Stern. Don is currently on faculty at Fairfield University teaching drum-set in the Jazz Department. He has an M.F.A. in Composition from Purchase College and a B.M. in Composition from Berklee College of Music. Don was on faculty at Purchase College until taking a position at Fairfield University under the direction of the virtuoso bassist Brian Torff. Don has performed on Broadway with the shows: The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Golden Land, On Second Avenue, Birds of Paradise, and Falsettos. Don was the drummer/vocalist with the legendary Boston based theatrical rock band Orchestra Luna, fusion jazz groups Mistral and Two One Two, the Michael Gibbs Big Band, afro pop jazz group Further Notice and G.R.P. recording artist Deborah Henson - Conant. Don has composed and has been commissioned to compose songs such as: “Fugue, for electronic music, “Introspect”, for solo piano, “String Quartet”, “Significance”, for jazz quintet, “Mountains”, “Nata Sonata”, “Dance” and “Silver Lake”. On the Urbnergy second CD he is the composer of “Hope” and “Calm”.
