So, how do you record an album when the musicians live on opposite sides of the world?

Indy left for Australia in 2004. Steve stayed in Suffolk. Hiding from immigration armed only with a tourist visa and acoustic guitar, Indy wrote the songs for This World or the Next in 2005. So as not to outstay his welcome, a short return to England in July allowed for rehearsal time. From November 2005 to April 2006, whilst Indy’s permanent visa was being processed, This World or the Next was born.

In stolen moments underground, through full-time jobs and perpetual colds, Indy and Steve recorded their third album together. Also featuring Lord Williamson of Shimpling on drums, Chris Daniels on keys and Heather Laws on cello, it has the biggest band sound of any of the duo’s albums. It may not have been mastered at Abbey road, but it has real character, and the songs are some of Indy’s finest. This is homebrew at its best.

Headphones with only one side working, trying to guess where mics should be to pick up the drums, holding up cue cards for Lord Williamson as he overdubs the drums on ‘The Way’, coffee and chat between takes, finishing lyrics on the plane back from Rome, recording additional guitar with a ridiculous hangover, hearing those amazing horn parts for the first time. Laughing until we cry. That’s music! Enjoy.
