by multi-award winning composer, David Crews
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Experience a peaceful and emotional journey into a musical mindscape directly inspired by the natural sounds and beauty of the Amazon Jungle, Machu Picchu in the Incan Andes mountains, the ancient Mayan sites in the jungles of Central America, and the vast landscapes of North America. Digital recordings of these environments, captured by the composer, form a soothing, sometimes invigorating backdrop for the emotional music which they inspired. The music is contemplative - now uplifting and joyful, then longing and wistful, reflecting the days and nights of our lives. It always speaks of our emotions.
Some of these pieces were directly inspired by indigenous native songs and others by the Spirit of the great forest Herself.
While not intended to be specifically ethnic in style, these pieces flow in a pathway of peace and poignancy, From simple joyfulness of high-soaring birds on a bluesky day to a true melancholy that sighs without being sad – an introspection that comes sometimes in the deep of night.
Join David Crews on a new journey in Natural World Music and lose yourself in Songs of Day – Songs of Night.
Natural soundscapes for each track:
• Spirits of the Forest – the great mother river herself, the Rio Amazonas – the Amazon, winds deep in the green birdsong jungles of Peru.
• Rainforest River – the sounds of the Rio Frio (Cold River) as it emerges from the Rio Frio Cave in the Maya Mountains of Belize, Central America.
• Amazon Twilight – the enchanting sounds of the Amazon jungle at twilight and the waters of the Rio Momon, a tributary of the Amazon.
• Jaguar Shadows – the Rio Momon flows by in the deep night filled with the voices of insects and animals. A tropical downpour adds drama to the land of the Jaguar.
• Temple of Leaf and Air – the wonderful sounds of the exotic birds and jungle at the Carocol Mayan ruins in the Maya Mountains of Belize, Central America.
• Rio Frio Cave – the Rio Frio splashes and flows through an immense cave filled with stalagmites and car sized boulders, then abruptly exits into lush jungle towards a series of inviting waterfalls. Maya Mountains of Belize, Central America.
• Birds of Urubamba – the rushing run of the Rio Urubamba that flows at the foot of the famed Incan site of Machu Picchu, near Cuzco, Peru. The high birdsong over the play of the water lifts spirits up to the heavens.
• Songs in the Night – a triptych of songs inspired by an evocative late night thunderstorm over Central Texas, USA. Contemplative and wistful music of life’s journey – music of one’s soul. Music of the night.
• Stars Don’t Care – A rich deep night soundscape from the small town of San Ignacio, in the Maya Mountains of Belize.
David Crews - Musical Bio:
David has been involved with electronic music since 1974, when he bought his first synthesizer - a MiniMoog - which he still owns. This instrument, along with another now vintage synth, the Arp 2600, have a place of honor in Jaguar Feather Studios. In fact, their unique sounds are still sampled and used in the modern computer-based instruments (anchored in Apple''s Logic Pro 7) that form the heart of the Studios. He also uses virtual symphony orchestra and ethnic instrument samples and software to create rich soundscapes and unique music.
David comes from a musical family and took piano lessons early in life, followed by six years of drums and percussion in Jr. High and High School bands. The latter was the very highly regarded Permian High School "Mojo" band from Odessa, Texas (yes, THAT school of Friday Night Lights fame). During this time, David specialized in Tympani, and earned a spot in the All State Band competition, where he had the pleasure of being conducted by Frederick Fennell.
In college, David started a broadcast career in radio and television by becoming the Classical Music Director of his college radio station. He began work at a local TV station in the production department, and has stayed in television production for over 35 years.
That career somewhat sidetracked him from pursuing electronic music, but the bug was always there. The advent of modern, computer-based total production made the difference, with most of the expensive hardware items now rolled in to a comprehensive software suite. The possibilities with these new tools are endless and infinitely compelling. The time for making music has come.
In the last couple of years, David has won three international awards for his music for long-form programs. In 2006, he won a Silver Telly Award (their highest award) for the music score to his film, "Big Bend – A Landscape Romance." He also won the Moondance International Film Festival''s "Calypso" Award for that same score.
In 2007, he won another Silver Telly Award, this time for his music to his film "Ancient Songs and Green Magic," a journey into the powerful shamanic realms of the tribal healers in the Amazon Jungle, which he participated in. This year of travel was the inspiration for most of "Songs of Day – Songs of Night."
David has been making award-winning commercials and programs for more than 35 years. He owns and operates his own editing, post-production, and original commercial music business, CrewsCreative.
