Keith Jarrett once said that music doesn’t come from music, but instead, music comes from life.
I have lead a rather adventurous and unconventional life. Born and raised in Everett,WA. ,I really wanted a drum set when I was 4 but my parents were poor and could not afford it. When I was 8 my mother bought a Hammond organ and I played occasionally but was more interested in sports. My uncle who was an artist and part time musician owned a Steinway Baby Grand and Hammond A100 but was fussy and didn’t want me to play them so I played the coffee table instead, pretending that I was giving concerts and composing music. Not the typical start to a blossoming career in music.
I didn’t really improve on my technique as far as playing the coffee table but I believe this is where I developed my approach to playing. I had to use lots of imagination when I played that coffee table and the sounds had to come from me because it just wouldn’t make a sound no matter how hard I played.
From that point on, whenever I did finally get to play a real instrument I still approached it the same, imagination was and still is first priority!
Keith Jarrett also mentions starting from point zero and ending at point zero. This has been very much my approach to playing which can feel quite insecure at times because you never know what’s going to happen next.
I finally took lessons when I was 17 and purchased a Hammond B3 then went on to playing Theatre Pipe Organs in Pizza Parlors in the 70’s and 80’s, did a short stint as organist for the Seattle Sounders soccer team in the Seattle Kingdome and then finally got into playing the piano when I was in my 30’s and then started to get into jazz a lot more. I tend to approach music more from a composer’s point of view than a musicians point of view.
I have been influenced by, The Beatles, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett,
Chick Corea and many, many more.
On acoustic piano people can tell my playing is heavily influenced by Bill Evans.
I have played music on and off professionally since I was 18 but have had other careers as well, the main one being a commercial fisherman for 27 years coming away with lots of fish stories! I also lived on a sailboat for 7 years.
I feel like my life experiences contribute to my music more than any schooling or technique could have. I feel like my life experiences bring a unique quality to my music.
This CD is a combination of all of my musical and life experience. I hope you enjoy it!
