Details:
“Mischief” is an exciting presentation of great songs by this Northwest singer-songwriter. It features the proven talent of an inventive lyricist, with an enjoyable variety of musical approaches. The rocker of this collection is “Homeland,” which is rapidly gaining popularity with its powerful challenge to the erosion of freedom in the United States. “Homeland” features blistering electric guitar work by Huhtala, creatively backed by the widely acclaimed Joey Patenaude. Patenaude appears on other cuts as well, playing guitar, bass and lap steel.

The CD lifts off with “Oasis,” a beautiful lament for those trapped in areas of war and conflict. This cut is built solely of guitar track and vocals by Huhtala. Even the haunting flute-like solo was coaxed from Huhtala’s guitar.

“Afghan Mountain” follows with a catchy dancing rhythm and pychedelic-tinged wah guitar. The song tells the story of a Buddhist on retreat in the mountains of Afghanistan who learns first hand that yellow unexploded cluster bomb cylinders look very similar to yellow food canisters that are air-dropped. The song has a happy ending, unlike the thousands of children that die each year believing that they had found food for their family.

“On Ecstasy” celebrates the paths of meditation, comtemplation, insight and compassion. This is watery mind expansion worthy to stand with any of the consciousness raising epistles of the 1960s.

“Left Without Saying Goodbye” offers a quick detour to a lovely waltz. This is a pleasant country number complete with jealousy, abandonment and a big tongue in cheek. Huhtala’s guitar work is clean and beautiful.

Huhtala recites his short poem, “Rats,” as an intro to “Homeland.” The poem sets the stage in Washington, DC, as fear of terrorists and dread of being exposed to anthrax were parlayed into Congressional acquiescence with surgical removal of civil liberties. Huhtala watched much of this unfortunate history first hand.

The guitar and vocals of “Dark and the Light” were recorded in a room in Portland, Oregon, on September 13, 2001. Huhtala had written the song that day, fearing (as it turned out, foreshadowing) a descent into war, driven by the Bush Administration. All he had was a ten-dollar pencil mic and a laptop with a free recording program. He wanted to share the raw intensity of this performance, with Patenaude brilliantly blending a lap steel part. Works for me.

“Your Love” is a sweet ballad that again reveals Huhtala’s western roots and ear for catchy melodies.

Huhtala considers “Second Nature” to be a tribute to the planet, a commentary on his involvement in the environmental movement, and a dirge about global warming. I don’t know about all that, but it is a fasinating piece of music with evocative lyrics.

The acoustic instrumental “Return to Peace Mountain” and the title track “Mischief” round out the CD.

Taken as a whole, this work by Peter Huhtala is a well crafted adventure. It is filled with fun and interesting musical twists and turns, while unabashedly political messages are often interwoven. "Homeland" is the obvious hit and is reason enough to own this CD, but many other tracks are sensational as well. You''ll be glad that you got into "Mischief."
