Jonathan Sorrell

Jonathan was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in 1961, a few miles from Stonehenge and Avebury, an area steeped in religious and Druid tradition. His father was a professional singer and his mother a pianist, so he was born into music. His childhood was spent hearing his father singing daily in Salisbury Cathedral, then later at St George’s Chapel Windsor, and sitting in on many rehearsals and recording sessions. His induction into professional music was early, becoming a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral at the age of 8. Over the next 5 years, he sang 9 services a week with the choir in the Cathedral, and reached diploma standard in both the piano and oboe.

He later specialised in composition and contemporary music at Goldsmiths College (other alumni include Malcolm Mclaren, Damien Hirst, Mary Quant, Lucian Freud and Sam Taylor-Wood), where he graduated in 1984.

Later that year he joined producer Trevor Horn’s stable at Sarm Studios and was keyboardist and Synclavier programmer on ZTT albums for Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Propaganda, the Art of Noise, Tears for Fears, Def Leppard (producer Mutt Lange), etc

Session credits include Synclavier and keyboards on many feature films, including Little Shop of Horrors (dir. Frank Oz), and numerous films with composer Philippe Sarde, including Lord of the Flies, The Bear, Music Box, etc. His film work has enabled him to work with such artists as Wayne Shorter, Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez, guitarist John Williams and Toots Thielmans.

In the mid-80’s through his Synclavier work, he began composing music for commercials and TV, basing himself at The Tape Gallery in Lexington Street, the first postproduction studio to invest in a Synclavier system. His output included many radio commercials, and a number of high-profile TV campaigns, including the privatisation of the Water Authority, JVC and Commercial Union.

From the late 80’s he spent 8 years working alongside well-established composer David Dundas ("Jeans On") at his Battersea studio, where they were producing four to five commercials a week, for brands such as Coke, 7-Up, American Airlines, Sprite, Pepsi, Lincoln Mercury, Guinness and Hersheys. TV work with David included logos for Channel 4, BBC World and Prime, Meridian and ITV, together with dramas "Sleepers" (BBC), "Dark City" (Channel 4), and "White Goods" (Meridian).

During this period Jonathan composed scores for several LWT productions, including "You Bet", "Blind Date" (re-arrangement), "Searchline Special" and "Pilot Error". He also co-composed (with Chris Andrews) the "Chart Show" themes and idents (originally Channel 4, later ITV) for over a decade.

Jonathan and his artist wife Miriam Sorrell returned permanently from the UK to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Malta at the end of 1997, and have since set up their own fully digital 24-track studio with full video sync and mastering facilities at their base in Sliema, from where they offer a full audio and music post-production service, ranging from scoring international film soundtracks to music, sound effects and voice-overs for television and radio commercials and corporate films. Whilst continuing to work on commercial productions in this time, Jonathan has also found the creative space and time to dedicate himself to his own composition work, music close to his heart.
