ROCK: 70''s Rock, ROCK: Punk-Pop

Details:
An independent rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Lore has it that no band has ever "made it" while working serious day jobs. Siggy is aggressively challenging this canard. The band’s educational and professional achievements are undeniable. Yet living lives of the mind while surviving the scars of brutality dealt by the hand of fate has created a rock band with a depth, rawness and drive many thought was relegated to the days of vinyl.

Siggy was formed in 1997 by lead singer Dr. Galen Buckwalter, then a professor at the University of Southern California, and Ryan Howes, a doctoral student in clinical psychology. The band initially carried on in the tradition of Buckwalter’s previous edu-punk band, the renowned Idiots Blocking Traffic. But Howes’ tone-driven guitar work paired with stadium rock drummer Paul Netherton and groovethrash bassist Craig Lassen propelled their sound beyond mere punk. Siggy’s first CD, Harlow’s Girl (1999) was hailed in the underground press as a direct descendant of The Velvet Underground, The Voidoids and Television. With its overt references to the notorious work of the infamous though still emulated researcher Harry Harlow, the album brought comparisons to the ideological works of Peter Tosh’s No Nuclear War (1987, EMI) and the Clash’s Sandinista! (1980, Epic).

The band released the critically acclaimed independent EP titled R in 2001, which further reinforced Siggy''s direct lineage with New York art rock of the ‘70’s. Bassist Deborah Buckwalter, a clinical neuropsychologist with the funk riffs of Tina Weymouth, joined Siggy before releasing their 3rd CD, Crytophasia in 2004. Again alluding to material familiar to the psychologically-minded (cryptophasia is the idiosyncratic language of identical twins), this CD was hailed by NY Rock as the surprise disc of the year. Cryptophasia was recognized as an assault of emotional brutality and beauty, furthering Siggy’s reputation as one of the premier minimalist rock bands of its era.

Siggy has continued to raise their professional game as well as their musical audacity. Buckwalter recently left an academic career to be the Chief Scientist for an online relationship building company. Howes is a practicing analytic psychologist in Los Angeles; Netherton works with marginalized teens who want to steal your car; and Deborah Buckwalter enhances the lives of the brain-injured and worried well.

Could it be that these circuitous lives of academia and intellectualism, along with physical and emotional trauma not discussed here but the topic of a PBS documentary called "Rolling," would be the pedigree of our next rock gods?

LA Producer Dave Trumfio (American Music Club, Wilco, Jesus and the Mary Chain), is betting on it as Siggy blasts out its fourth CD titled, The Absinthe Effect, an effort he mixed. As Trumfio says, “Siggy is Bowie with a set a balls.”
