Based on the classic novel by Leopold von Sacher Masoch, VENUS in FURS is an erotic love story between Severin, a man who desires to be dominated by a despotic lover, and Wanda, a free spirited and curious young woman, who fulfills his fantasy, and in the process discovers within herself true cruelty. When a committed relationship is refused to Severin, he senses in Wanda a potential to fulfill another, and darker dream. He confesses to Wanda his desire to worship her. Wanda agrees to take Severin as her slave. Although hesitant at first, Wanda discovers in herself the capacity for extreme and unanticipated cruelty. Torture is a form of medicine, and love is a ritual of annihilation. Deeds that transpire hence, however, make it difficult to know who is really in control.
VENUS in FURS was originally commissioned by the Golden Fleece and premiered on March 2004 in New York. The current recording is a re-working of the opera with electronic scoring. Designed, produced and directed by Yoav Gal.
The recording features the talents of soprano Heather Green, vocal and visual artist, hailed for her "eerie vocalizations” by New York Times critic Allan Kozinn, and Aram Tchobanian has performed in 20 languages throughout the United States and in Europe, and created numerous contemporary opera roles.
Composer Yoav Gal was born in Israel and has been making a name for himself as a creator of “mini-operas”. His work concentrates on the marriage of music and image, and was described as "music that is drawn to what''s next, rather then what has been" by the NY Times’ Allan Kozinn. Gal is Bang on a Can Peoples Commissioning Fund recipient for 2006. He has also recently received commissions from Merkin Concert hall, Golden Fleece Opera, groups such as the trio Real Quiet, Ensemble Pamplemousse, ICE, and Now ensemble, as well as individual musicians such as David Cossin, Gila Goldstein, Wendy Sutter, and others. Gal’s recently released CD: Bit by Bit - Cell by Cell, on the Innova label, has been described as “… a clusters of angels caught in various beams of light and held suspended as their songs bleed through to our world” (Dream Magazine); “A gorgeous work for Atari 800XL and soprano voice” (DaveX, the Startling Moniker); as well as “perfectly accessible and often quite beautiful for it” (Tim Rutherford-Johnson – https://www.tradebit.com. Heather Green Biography
Hailed for her "eerie vocalizations" by New York Times critic Allan Kozinn, vocal and visual artist, Heather Green works to further the creation of art that exists on multiple perceptual levels. Green endeavors to weave sound, motion and image in the creation of an enveloping aesthetic experience.
Since completing her BFA in Sculpture at Pratt Institute in 2001, Heather has devoted herself to the study and performance of traditional operatic repertoire and New Music, believing Opera to have the most powerful tradition of multi-dimensional expression.
Ms. Green made her New York debut in scenes from Yoav Gal''s "Mosheh" at Merkin Concert Hall, in which she created the demanding lead role of Pharaoh’s Daughter. She looks forward to singing in the full production of the opera at Merkin, in March 2006. Further collaboration with Yoav Gal took place in the Chamber Opera, "Venus in Furs." Heather sang the title role, in which New Music Connoisseur editor, Barry Cohen called her "attractive
and well voiced."
Ms. Green''s skills as writer and director were seen in the 2002 New York International Fringe Festival, in the sculptural performance piece, "You Are Here." Her work was awarded The Mellon Grant for Creative Research. She has since contributed to the direction and design of operatic works at Vertical Player Repertory Opera and Theater For The New City.
Heather''s performances from the standard repertoire include selections from The Magic Flute (The Queen of the Night, Papagena) Rigoletto (Gilda), Le Nozze di Figaro (Susanna) and Hansel & Gretel (Gretel). Heather was awarded a full tuition scholarship to sing in the LISMA 2005 International Music Festival, at Old Westbury College, NY, and currently studies at Long Island Conservatory. Heather will be heard as Violetta Valery in the New York Opera Studio performance of La Traviata in February 2006.
Aram Tchobanian has performed in 20 languages throughout the United States and in Europe. He was recently heard on New York’s WBAI-FM in the world premiere of Ben Yarmolinsky’s The Constitution: A Secular Oratorio. Other recent performances include John Jacks in Yarmolinsky’s opera Blind Witness News, Florestan in Fidelio with the One World Symphony, Laca in Janacek’s Jenufa, and the title role in Mozart’s Idomeneo. He has performed the world premieres of the Gregorian/Komitas Divine Liturgy at Boston’s Symphony Hall, Jakov Jakoulov’s Narek Strophes with the Bachanalia Festival Orchestra, Ben Yarmolinksy’s Alice, Yoav Gal’s operas The Dwarf and Venus in Furs, Marga Richter’s opera Riders to the Sea, Gal Ziv’s Tower of Babel at The Knitting Factory in New York City, Eric Schwartz’s When old corruption first begun. . . , and Gal Ziv’s I’yov and Roy Zu-arets’s Influx for the 92nd Street Y’s Music at Makor.
Aram was tenor soloist in the Verdi Requiem with the Brooklyn Contemporary Chorus and both the tenor and bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Mass in B minor at the 2300-seat Lehman Center for the Performing Arts.
Upcoming projects include the world premiere of Martin Halpern’s opera Odysseus and Ajax at LaMama ETC, Strephon in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, and a recording of Marga Richter’s Riders to the Sea on the Leonarda label.
Aram has sung leading roles with Opera/Columbus, Whitewater Opera Company, Columbus Light Opera, and at the National Opera Association National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Orchestral appearances include the Columbus Symphony, the Armenian Festival Orchestra, the Lancaster Music Festival, the Foundation for Sacred Music and Art orchestras, and the New York Choral Symphony Society. A proponent of new music, Aram has performed with the New York-based groups Friends and Enemies of New Music, Forecast Music, and the Kivun Project. With these and other ensembles, he has premiered numerous operas, oratorios, and works for tenor and chamber ensemble.
Aram will sing the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Musica Bella’s June 17 and 18, 2006 production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Mozart and Salieri.
