Bluegrass has many homes in Europe, but it’s no exaggeration to say that over the past 10 years, the annual European World of Bluegrass Festival in Voorthuizen, Holland, has become primus inter pares - the first among equals. And a large part of what makes EWOB special - and is so well represented on this collection - is its role not only as a first-rate festival presenting a fascinating array of the continent’s many flavors of the music, but as a venue where an equally broad range of US artists have shared the stage with their European colleagues.
All of the shades of bluegrass that can be found on its home turf, from plaintive old-time antecedents to hard-driving golden era classicism to winsome contemporary ballads to 21st century contemporary bluegrass can be heard here. There’s an increasingly impressive mastery of virtually every aspect of the music. And there’s a growing body of material written by European songwriters that can stand alongside the work of domestic writers.
This collection demonstrates that the European bluegrass mainstream flows closely alongside its US counterpart - and not only with respect to the music’s past, but its present and its future, too. In the end, while this lovingly - and smartly - assembled set serves as a representation of Europe’s dynamic bluegrass community and its premiere event, its ultimate value is simply in the music itself.
