How does one write a bio that people find interesting? I’ve heard it’s better to share one experience than list several. So let me give you what I consider one of the turning points of my musical path to date. It’s about what happened in a dream.
There, I was listening to a radio program and hearing the most beautiful music I’d ever heard. It was so moving it held me in awe and exhilaration. When I awoke, the melody was completely gone, yet the euphoric feeling remained; and though I tried to remember even the smallest part, I couldn’t. Even though I sincerely wished I could have had the music to keep, I was grateful for hearing it at all!
A few moments later came the insight that changed my musical path. I was trying to remember what I’d heard by going over the details of the dream, when I realized the radio was just a way for the music to catch my attention. And here was the turning point -- because the radio was a product of my mind, the music must have been too. It was my music! Soon the question of who or what put it there arose, but that’s a mystery better left to the theologians.
Because of that experience, I began adding a lot more orchestration to my music. I now accept the music without need to verify quality. (After all it had been on the radio!)
