Downturn is unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorize and innovative bands working today. The music is breathtaking, ranging from psychedelic trip-pop to metallic rock, and a compendium of other sounds and genres in between.
The band is fronted by Stephen J. Severino and Michael B. Vaughn who are also the main members of San Jose''s very own industrial band God Dog.
Severino is well-known for his work producing other artists, from local San Jose punk-ska band Point of View, to alternative rock band The Bane. He also has several other projects, including Blind Deception, The Killing Fields, Devolve, and Truama Industry.
Michael Vaughn who is the backbone of Downturn found himself craving something different musically. After the last God Dog album was recorded in 2004 the ten year run was tasting a bit stale for him and he decided to try something new. Originally composing tracks for himself with a project that was supposed to have "that jazz feel" to it, Vaughn felt he needed something that would POP OUT to his listeners. Turning to Severino who was currently recording The Bane''s first album, Vaughn asked him to take a listen to the recordings and see what he could do with the tracks. Severino not only added his electronic flare but decided to invite several various musicians to chime in their creative support. Nine months later Downturn was born.
Although what you are listening to is not the complete version of this album, you can still sense the idea projected behind the music and title of the CD. The original album was layered with samples from various science fiction films to retain the effect of its continuity. Still, the music is rich with creativity and innovation that will inspire listeners for years to come...
