I thought for a time of calling this CD "Sound and Fury," because so much of it is a reflection of music on a pure emotional level, but it''s more than just that.
"The Place Beneath the Silence" is that place where you don''t expect to find things but massive amounts of energy and activity occur. It''s the chaos that occurs on microscopic levels. It''s the fire hidden within nearly extinguished embers. It''s the moments of revelation that come in times of quiet meditation.
Every piece on this album is the product of quiet and solitude, though the product itself might not sound so. It''s anger, rage, hope & love. It''s life and joy. It''s music I love to share and perform, and now it''s ready for me to share with all of you.
Westward Train came to me from listening to Django Reinhardt and thinking about old style swing rhythms. The Tin Man''s Wish came out of an experimentation with combining open tunings and partial capos. The result turned into a rather fun piece of music which hopefully will, at some point, inspire someone to dance.
Tradewinds, Morning Dew and Alone in the Wilderness are all Banjo experiments. Basics is a generic phrase I use for any piece which is improv on solo base. This is one such piece.
Loco Motion was created on a Sunday afternoon in May of 2002, and performed that very night. The entire piece is about motion, movement and pure fun. I would have probably called it "Dizzy Fingers" except that Chet Atkins beat me to it.
Fearless started to find its way to me in the Summer of 2001, shortly after the release of "Rough Cuts." It mixes a variety of patterns and styles, shifting between jazz, blues, middle-eastern and other stuff I can''t even define.
The Penguin Dance and Spirit Dance were first written for multiple instruments, but later became solo pieces.
