Details:
Music has always been an integral part of Kate''s life. According to family legend, she was singing in the crib before she could talk. Today, this progressive folk singer-songwriter invites the listener to traverse the landscape of her life, loves, and passions on her debut CD, Before We Go. Her heartfelt lyrics address both the personal and the political, reflecting her deep concern for social justice issues.

"you gotta take it from me and a million witches in the sea
you can’t go back if you want to be free
ah freedom…sweet freedom is calling you home
it’s calling you home"
- calling you home

Kate''s early musical influences include Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. "Their music had an impact on me and made me realize that music''s power extends beyond entertainment," she says. On a more personal level, the self-taught, teenaged Kate was befriended by a very talented musical family, the Harcourts, who helped shape her life and music. “They encouraged and nurtured both me and my music and helped me take my music to another level.” With this support, she began playing in clubs four and five times a week while still in high school, and has played throughout the Northeast, impressing her audiences with her rhythmic and sometime percussive guitar style.

"you gotta find time to sing
gotta find time to dance
gotta find time to play
gotta find time for just a little romance"
- find time

Each of Kate’s songs touches on issues near and dear to her heart, like allowing people to find their own path in life. “What a different world this would be if we allowed our children the freedom to fit in to their own molds, instead of the ones we create for them based on our own stereotypes and fears. I believe if this was the case, we would have a much more loving, accepting society.” This sentiment was the impetus for Fish Fry, which offers a light touch to the serious topic of conformity and the importance of living life the way you see fit.

"cuz we’re all little fish
in a deep, dark sea
of conformity ya ya"
- fish fry

Her lyrics in Hidden Lake voice her dismay regarding the over-development of our environment, triggered by many attempts to revisit her childhood escapes, only to find them replaced by yet another strip mall or large development of oversized homes.

"cuz there are castles to my left
and there are castles to my right
did anyone speak a word
could anyone shed some light on all of these changes
goin’ on around me"
- hidden lake

Other songs on the CD deal more personally with love and loss as in the case of Spilling Over, Fall, and Two Roads.

"i know i’ve been living
for years in this shell
while you are the story that i have been dying, dying, dying to tell"
- spilling over

Kate found creating this CD to be a liberating experience, feeling that she has finally tapped in to her soul’s resources and is now getting the chance to share with the world. She hopes her music and lyrics touch the listener and offer a sense of validation.
