Details:
From formal education in classical music theory at the age of 12, Kevin Ferguson has spent decades studying and reducing to practice various music theories and compositional approaches while performing on various instruments. Studies have included Advanced Theory and Composition classes from Julliard''s Carmen Rodrigez-Peralto, Hindustani classical from Nisha Ghoshi (a disciple of a disciple of Ravi Shankar), Maqam, the folk music of Western and Eastern Europe, the middle, near and far East, several parts of Africa and Latin America. Performing on various instruments in orchestras and bands, he primarily focused on the guitar and has released four prior albums including "Strad To Strat," electric guitar renditions of virtuoso style violin music by Paganin, Vivaldi, Bach, Sarasate, etc., "Exotic Extremes," electric and acoustic guitar renditions of music from the former Ottoman Empire (including the Balkans, Gypsie Jazz, Middle East, etc.), and two more albums with tracks of these sorts along with tracks of original music with all kinds of ways of combining the se along with jazz, rock, and other world music.
This latest work is a culmination of the above along with studying and developing original ideas in the theory of asthetics, creativity and recent work in developing mathematical models of human perception. The compositional approach here parallels story telling, with each character developed through interaction with other characters, in the contexts of various locations and circumstances, resulting in a plotline involving varying degrees of conflict and resolution. The bias is towards the traditional classical styles from Baroque counterpoint through the Romantic period, with various interludes sometimes reflecting more exotic places.
