WHO IS "MDK"

I am Melvin Douglas Kent - born June 20th , 1944 in Richmond , Virginia, son of a Preacher man. I got my first introduction to and first sight of a professional singer when I was 7 years old. When I introduced myself to a magnificent man -shining like a star- like he just stepped out of heaven - I told him my name, he told me his - it was Nat King Cole. That day. in that restaurant changed me forever: I knew what I wanted to be. At the age of 15, I formed a 5 man -singing group called "the Del- Marks". We sang all over Richmond, VA and even opened the show for Fats Domino at the Thunderbird Club and he inspired us to continue. At that time another 5 man -singing group in town that we knew, called the Cherokees hooked up with The Drifters and went to New York to record their first record. They became the Jarmels., and that record became a smash hit called " A Little Bit of Soap" I was convinced that our day would come.

I came to New York in 1962 and in 1967 I formed another 4 man singing group called Heart and Soul . In 1968 we won the Amateur Night Show at the world famous Apollo Theater , 5 weeks in a row - and as our Grand Winning Prize we got to Open the show for one week in 1969 for none other than Jackie Wilson, Bobby Blue Bland and Barbara Ackland, after which Bob Shiffman (owner of the Apollo Theater) signed us to a management contract with "Right On Records" - an independent label. I wrote a song called "That''s Not My Bag"
which we recorded, as well as "Pretty Little Brown Skin girl Girl" a song the Temptations had recorded at Motown but never released. The company folded under finacial woes that ended that . I was a talent evaluator for Bob Shiffman at the Apollo Theater for a while before joining a production writing and publishing team of J.R. Bailey, Ken Williams and Melvin D. Kent. Bailey ,William ,and Kent became a powerful writing team around New York in the 70''s . Most notable for writing the lyrics to Scot Joplin''s "The Entertainer ". Just before I arrived. Baily , Williams , and Clark had a #1 smash with the main Ingredient called "Everybody plays the fool" . We continued to capitalize on that success by writing hits for Donny Hathaway, the Main Ingredient,
Tom Jones, and others. We also produced other acts for major labels such as Paramount, Columbia, and Chess Ect. Under the company, name of A-Dish-A-Tunes LTD.

Then came Disco and rap....!!!
I went home, put my songs, my music talents in storage until the time was right for me again .

THAT TIME IS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
