Without Hollywood or Times Square around the corner to dictate what we should be thinking and doing, we’ve been forced to seek energy and ideas from our hearts, minds, and souls. Mindrite has become provocative ideas, dynamic music; it is sweet melody and hooks that catch you and cling-it’s an unmistakably singular yet universal sound.
It’s hard to imagine how any of us found each other at this point; growing up only miles apart, we never knew of each other until the band fortuitously formed in 2003 over some drinks and some whimsical decisions to pick up instruments and ’jam.’ None of us knew what we were doing; being called amateurs would have been a major compliment at the time.
As the band jammed more and booked our first show, we knew we had to come up with a name. Of course this was the toughest part, so we settled on our metaphor for drinking Miller High Life’s before we practiced - "gettin’ our mind’s right."
We of course did not know that the name Mindrite would later come to be adopted by an up-and-coming Canadian rapper, as well as being used in popular ganster rap songs by Young Jeezy as well as Lil’ Wayne. However, the name meant then exactly what it means now, and you can take it however you want it. Mindrite means freeing yourself from all of the poisons that are stuffed down your throat, through your eyes, and ears on a daily basis. Getting your mind right is about opening up and finding all you need within yourself. And getting your mind right is most definitely about freedom and experimentation to see what is out there and to be open to ideas outside the norm.
We started out with an excess of ambition and negligible musical experience, but jumped right into the game formatting the most efficient plan by analyzing the successes and failures of all the bands around us and before us in the area. Mindrite not only quickly made a name for ourselves, but we also set a new standard in Des Moines in the way shows are booked and promoted, how the music is written, produced, and performed, and how resources are used on a local level.
For five years, we’ve harnessed our creative powers, and used Midwestern work ethic to launch Mindrite to new levels. Over those intense five years, our tenacious efforts have yielded 48 original songs released on 4 different albums, over 200 shows in the Midwest with performances to crowds of 3,000+ people at times, two music videos, a live CD, a full-length DVD with a second in the making, airtime on radio stations across the country, (most notably Lazer 103.3 and 105.1 Channel Q in the Des Moines area), and positive press from numerous newspaper and online publications.
Mindrite has always been aware of the uphill battle we face because of the obscure region we’re from. We’ve been very eager to build and maintain a dedicated fan base on the internet. Mindrite has accrued more plays in the shortest amount of time on https://www.tradebit.com than any other unsigned band in 9 states in the Midwest -160,000+ plays in 3 years, 4 months - confirmed March 2008-, while having a mere 5,000 friends on MySpace. (sorry, we still work full-time jobs and can’t sit on MySpace all day requesting friends). This loyal network has helped build the band from the ground up, and are always willing to help deploy our operation. Mindrite’s fan base is even responsible for the largest crowd we’ve ever played in front of; by voting us atop 50+ other bands to open for Godsmack last summer.
Mindrite’s priority has been to maintain a close connection with our fans and to always involve them till the end of our career. We allow fans to give us input on our songs as well as share the stage with us on special occasions. The music we distribute and the feedback we receive from press and our fans testifies to the quality of our product. We’ve proved on many occassions we have an addictive sound.
We are now five years into this, and we have secured a position where our product is viable, our integrity as a band is steadfast, and our operation is prolific on every level. Mindrite will continue to tour, spreading the word and making new friends and fans everywhere we go. We are seeking relationships with professionals of every facet of this business that can provide us with their expertise, insight and advice to take us to the next level, where we can put our sound up against the industry’s best bands and prove we belong.
