Rebekah Star’s debut EP might be called Alien Nation, but she definitely won’t be alienated. The six songs are a unique mix of
electro, rock, funk and pop, and are seductively kick-ass. Produced by Los Angeles-based Greg Hampton who is working on Bootsy Collins and
Buckethead’s new project, the songs include the Blondie-esque “Electro Soul,” groovy “Mystery of Love” and scratch-heavy “Tragedy.”

“A friend of mine used the words ‘electro-soul’ to describe my music about two years ago. I decided to write a song called ‘Electro Soul,’
but I don’t think my music is electro soul, as a definition,” Rebekah says. “The electro part, yes; the soul part, not as https://www.tradebit.comre are some aspects of soul in my vocals, but I don’t think it’s so dominant in the music that it should earn that title. It''s more dominant in rock and pop. I’m very inspired by music that has a live element, but also music that has a electronic vibe to it.”

Rebekah, who was born in Toronto and attended Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts, has been writing songs for 11 years. Singing for as long as she can remember, her first instrument, chosen during her music specialty in middle school, was clarinet, at which she excelled. She
later picked up guitar and keyboards, now her main instruments. Why is Alien Nation her first commercial release?

“I enjoy so many different styles of music, so for me there was a lot of choice as to what style of music I wanted to put in an album,” Rebekah explains. “I played around with acid jazz, trip hop for a little while, but right now I’m into this electro rock pop thing, and I''m having fun with it.”

She started by picking up the music software program Reason and messing around at home to get sounds. “That was a big learning experience, and rewarding too. I''d like to get back into that again”. She made songs from scratch, and that yielded some demos, something to let people hear.

After meeting former Joydrop bassist Tom McKay at Toronto’s Cameron House, the two started working together at his home studio. “We
recorded a couple of songs, ‘Electro Soul’ and ‘Underworld,’” Rebekah says.

“When I write songs, I try to keep it open so that people can interpret it their own way,” she says.

With these songs and some others in the early stages, Rebekah casually mentioned she was a musician to another friend and asked him to check out her MySpace page. He did and, in turn, told his friend Greg Hampton to check it out. “A month later, I was in his studio in L.A. recording four more songs. I was actually really sick when I went down there to record, I wasn’t feeling very confident about what was going to come out, but he was very helpful in coaching.”

Greg also re-did the other two songs, making them edgier, and helped write the lyrics to “Alien Nation.” “I had sent him a song that was
just vocals — no beat, no music behind it — and he made the production right around it (My Addiction),” Rebekah says. “I was very pleased about the way he made it work, and I wasn’t even there. It was all long distance. So when I went down, I just recorded the vocals over the course of four days.”

“Mystery of Love” and “Tragedy” were written entirely by Greg, but Rebekah was excited enough by the tracks to cut them. “‘Mystery…’ I
just really like singing the song. I like the way it starts and it has the aspects of a song I like to sing. ‘Tragedy,’ I thought fit really
well with everything else that I’m doing. It has this edgier rock to it, but still kept with this electronic and pop.

“It was a nice collaboration,” she concludes, happy to finally have completed her debut EP. “Although it didn''t all happen the way I thought, it turned out to be the type of album I was visualizing, and I''m happy with that."
