‘Refashioned’ is the debut album from vocalist Ruthie Culver, who has established a reputation for her powerful and passionate performances. The album demonstrates her remarkable strengths as a lyrical and intriguing storyteller, leading the listener on a journey incorporating chill-out funk, swing jazz & latin standards, plus European political cabaret songs.

Her performances have been likened to a cross between Ute Lemper and Peggy Lee. With occasional lyrics in French and German she moves from Edith Piaf to Astor Piazzolla (via Grace Jones) and from Cole Porter to Bertolt Brecht.

The title of the album refers not only to the nature of jazz itself, but also to the central, self-penned tune ‘The Perfect Dress’ – her own song about ethical shopping.

But this is no bandwagon-jumping exercise: a young woman of strong convictions, before becoming a singer Ruthie Culver had a successful career staging large charity events, raising over £1million for AIDS. She still works with an organisation that helps disadvantaged youngsters, which informed one of her choices for the album: “I had to include Fran Landesman’s ‘Ballad of the Sad Young Men’ – a beautiful lament for lost potential – because it links these two parts of my life.”

Jazz isn’t a style normally associated with social issues, but Ruthie is known for combining the personal and the political in her live performances. “The subversive origins of cabaret are a fruitful hunting ground for songs about difficult subjects like war and prejudice,” she says. “Here in the UK ‘Cabaret’ is a dirty word, dismissed as light entertainment for cruise-ships. But the cabarets were often hotbeds of protest and satire, and generated some wonderful songs like ‘Munchhausen’ which are – sadly – all too relevant today."

‘Refashioned’ features an outstanding rhythm section, plus special guests including Columbian salsa superstar Roberto Pla and Italian trumpeter Fulvio Sigurta.
