Gail Jo and the Criminals Of Love play the blues, original music and cover tunes. They have just released their first original CD titled "Appointment with The Blues". The Criminals of Love are a five-piece band with Gail Bisho on vocals and keyboard, Vernon Bisho on bass and vocals, Gene Peshette on harmonica, Trent Teague on drums and vocals, and Ed Simental on sax. These musicians have been playing in various bands throughout California and abroad for many years and have finally come together to form this original group. Gail and Vernon have formed several versions of bands over the last fifteen years. After forming a duo with Gail on keys and vocals and Vernon on Bass, Guitar, and MIDI sequencer, they booked a two-month over seas tour with the Department of Defense. They played music in Japan, Korea, Guam, Okinawa, Australia, and the Micronesian Islands.
After playing cover tunes for more than twenty years, they both decided it was time to write and perform their own music. The Criminals of Love formed a few years ago when Gail and Vernon decided to record a few songs they have been working on. They had been playing local coffee shops and working out song ideas until the all of the pieces fit. Member Bios:
Gail Bisho:
Gail Bisho has been playing in bands for over twenty years as a keyboard player and lead vocalist. Her training started in early childhood with piano lessons and continued in high school as accompanist for choirs and in college as the accompanist for Jazz Choirs. She spent about seven years on the road playing in clubs around the United States and over seas. Gail has continued studying piano and teaches private lessons. Her diverse experience makes Gail a gifted teacher and talented performer. Gail plays a Baldwin grand and a Yamaha digital keyboard.
Vernon Bisho:
Vernon got his start playing in bands at an early age. Several of his bands played original music only, which gave him a continued interest in song writing and recording. His other bands played cover tunes and top forty, which created opportunities to travel through much of the United States and over seas. After a couple of years on the road Vernon decided to put his teaching credential to use and began teaching high school music in 1984. He has taught band and choirs in high schools for the last twenty years and currently teaches computer graphics and video production at Center High School. Vernon plays a Fernandez (Alembic style) electric bass and a Zeta electric upright bass.
Trent Teague:
Trent met Vernon in the early ''80s when they were teaching in the same school district. After their tour with the Department of Defense in ''92, Gail and Vernon asked Trent to form a trio. He was a great fit because of his sense of humor and his musical approach to drumming. Trent is a music teacher in Sacramento in the San Juan School District. He has a degree in music on percussion and teaches music to hundreds of kids every year. He has been drumming for over thirty years in every kind of band you can imagine. Trent also plays Dixieland jazz with the Cats and Jammers Band. Trent plays Ayotte Drums
Gene Peshette:
Gene grew up in the San Francisco area and got his start in the music business working for Bill Graham at the Fillmore in the ''60s. Gene was the manager of the Flaming Groovies when the band made their first break into the Fillmore. That band went on to become one of the Bay Areas most popular bands. While working at the Fillmore, Gene met many of rock''s most famous icons including Janis Joplin, The Jefferson Starship and Jimi Hendrix. Gene was there when these bands were making history. He currently teaches high school woodshop and mechanical drafting. Gene plays Honner Golden Melodies, Special 20s, and Steve Baker Specials, Lee Oscar minor keys, Bushman models, and uses a Fender Blues Junior and a hand made Holland harmonica amp.
Ed Simental:
Ed is a full time musician and works part time at Center High School with Vernon and Gene. One day Ed walked into Vernon''s jazz band rehearsal with is sax and proceeded to show everyone how to rip a serious bebop solo. Ed has been a regular member of the Criminals since then. Ed plays for several groups in the Sacramento area and is working on his own CD of original music. Ed plays Selmer saxophones.
About the songs:
The lyrics to "Criminal of Love" were written by Vernon long ago. Vernon kept hearing it as a country tune and decided not to do anything with it. The song came to life when Gail turned it into a blues tune.
Appointment With the Blues was inspired by a song recorded by Little Walter called "Why are People Like That?" We chose this title for the album because it sounded good. A good friend and superb musician Tom Whinnery played the killer harmonica solo on this song.
"Other Valentines" is a true story. One of Gail''s friends found a stack of love letters in her boyfriend''s home while he was out and she read every one of them. Kurt Shearer added the cool organ track that was accidentally left off during the recording session. He quickly patched in his keyboard in the middle of the mix down session, improvised a nice track and finished the mix before the session timed out.
"Walk Through The Desert" was written by Vernon and is a reminder that even though life is hard, if you hang in there, you will get through eventually.
Gail wrote "Long Distance". She wanted to write a song with a good dance groove and lyrics that tell a story. The driving rhythm makes this song fun to play.
Have A Heart was also written by Gail. The medium tempo and minor key creates a melancholy mood with a catchy rhythm. Our good friend Reggie Graham played a tasty organ track, which helps create a subtle feeling.
The song "California" is the only song on the CD that isn''t straight ahead blues. It has more of a county/folk feeling to it but we felt it had the right spirit to include on our blues album.
Gail wrote "Sing Me Blue" after talking to our harmonica player, Gene. He came up with a couple of catchy lines that immediately inspired the song. The song practically wrote itself when Gail started working on it. Gene was supposed to get an album credit for this song but was inadvertently left out (oops, sorry Gene).
