Frank White: Redefining the Rap Game

The name may be ordinary, but Houston independent rap label owner Frank White has proven he’s an extraordinary businessman. With over a decade of experience, White is redefining how the world sees “southern country rap.”

It was 1996 when White decided to leave his hometown of Amarillo, Texas and take his talents to the Bayou City, thinking Houston could bring more luck in the rap arena. It’s there that he developed a love of “Screw Music" and the Houston style of rap.

"When I first moved to Houston, I met "Big Hawk" and he greeted me with open arms even though he didn’t know who the hell I was! Once I found out how open armed the game was, I decided to pursue my career as an indie label owner (Unkutt Records) with my brother Prez-D and a writer and producer.”

The brothers’ hard work is paying off. With seven releases from Unkutt Records and sales that are turning heads (they sold 25,000 units independently), White and his brother are looking at a bright future in the rap game. And they’re working with some of the best talents to make that happen.

“The beats in our music are hot,” White said. “They’re produced by Q-Stone, who also produced for Slim Thug, ESG, Prez-D, and Z-Ro.”

White – who has a degree from Sam Houston State University - has worked with artists from California, New York and Texas, including Sean Blaze who has worked with 50 cent on the Get Rich or Die Trying album and Chammillionaire on the Sound of Revenge.

White’s job is not without its difficulties. Among the most challenging, obtaining a distribution company he can trust to handle his music.

“Getting distribution deals are difficult right. Independent labels are struggling with finding individual handling as the music industry is moving away form the store front.” White said.

White is confident if anyone can make it happen, he can. His goal is to prove himself as an artist, produce quality music, stay consistent day to day and grow as an artist.”

And with multiple projects on his plate, White believes the sky is the limit. “Five years from now, I see myself as part of the new revolution in the music industry. Since I hate to lose and love to win, I know I’ll make that happen!”

Kiotti
A chance meeting at a talent show with a key A&R, and a management deal with Latium Records (home to Chamillioniare, Pitbull, Play N Skillz and more) led him to his current home, Asylum Records, the label currently repping the new sound of Houston like no other.

“There was a talent show here and I hosted it.” He explains his gradual transformation from independent to major artist. “They had a representative come down here named Selim Boaub, who was at Def Jam at the time. He later moved over to Asylum and got a situation and called me to do business. I pride myself in taking care of business.”

Between 2006-2007, Kiotti’s grind intensified. He has been on over 200 mixtapes. As well as being a voice of the streets, he tried his hand at a new task. Radio. Currently he has the night show at Houston’s Party Station, Party 93.3. (REALITY RADIO) As well as the local show on Sunday. “ You can say history is repeating itself.” Says Kiotti. “Ludacris had great success making the transition from radio to music to movies. I just had to put my own twist to it. I’ll take music, then radio, then movies. As long as the story ends the same, I’m good!”

Currently, Kiotti owns his own record label. (YOUNG INK). His new tv show,
“THE DROP SPOT”, is slated to air in March on NBC.
