The lyrics to the songs that make up the “Masters of Terror” section of this CD (Tracks 8 through 15) form a conceptual mini-album within the larger CD, dealing with issues related to the War on Terror and the war in Iraq. The music on these tracks include a variety of musical styles - rock (“Survivor: Baghdad”), folk-rock (“Talkin’ Military-Industrial Complex Blues” and “Masters of Terror”) , a ballad (“Support Our Troops”), gospel/reggae (“The Only Thing We Have To Fear” and “More Things We Have To Fear”), and electronica (“Fear Is In The Air” and “Survivor: Baghdad - Epilogue”).
The three songs that make up the heart of this section (“Talkin’ Military Industrial Complex Blues,” “Support Our Troops,” and “Survivor: Baghdad”) were originally a single song. Despite a Herculean effort to trim the lyrics, the song was coming in at more than twelve minutes. So the middle section (“Support Our Troops”) was rewritten as a ballad with completely different music. A key change and different instrumentation helped to differentiate between the first and third songs in the trilogy.
As Randy Riga worked out his accordion part for “Talkin’ Military-Industrial Complex Blues,” he realized he could use part of the melody to “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Another snippet of the national anthem was inserted into “Survivor: Baghdad - Epilogue.” After receiving the blessing of Francis Scott Key (through the use of a medium), the melody of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was incorporated into the title piece for the mini-album (“Masters of Terror”).
The rest of the songs on the CD (the “Hot Little Love Monkey” section) are also quite eclectic musically. “Carry Me Away” is a pop-rock tune with a slight gospel feel to the chorus. A ragtime piano part fuels “Honky-Tonk Heaven.” “By the Grace of Gracie” is a straight-ahead rock song. “Loneva” has a distinctly Carribean flavor. “Wouldn’t You Love To Be A Celebrity” is a bluesy, roots-rock tune. “Success” is a very dance-able, yet thought-provoking reggae number. And the title track (“Hot Little Love Monkey”) is another straight-ahead rocker with direct, minimalist lyrics that manage to say a whole lot about the battle between the sexes.
The first of the two bonus tracks (“Hot Little Guitar Monkeys”) is an instrumental version of the title track. The guitar work by Kevin Dolan and Lowell Premer was so hot it needed to be trimmed back to let the vocals do their thing. So this version was added to showcase these two extremely talented guitarists.
The final track (“I Like Snickers”) is an unauthorized endorsement of Winston’s favorite candy bar.
