Zipp Edwards was born and raised in the great multicultural state of California and his music is just as rich and diverse. The “uniqueness” of his style is the blending of themes and genres into an evocative and exhilarating musical signature.
As Zipp says about his debut album: “Out Of The Blue is what happens when a rock guitarist, who was formally trained as a classical composer, is asked to write a jazz album. What do you get? Jazz Rock fusion with orchestral flare…of course!”
Zipp grew up in a small charming southern California mountain community. It was in this forested hamlet with its changing seasons, that he drew his inspiration. After years of studying piano, he moved on to the guitar and as he says jokingly: “It was love at first fret”. The instrument became gateway through which composition after composition flowed. By the time he was 17 he already had a significant body of work. As a child he traveled Europe with his family spending time in Paris, Italy, Switzerland and Spain. It was from these adventures that he developed a taste for multiple cultures that formed the bedrock for his style of multi genre blending.
As time progressed, Zipp entered a university music program as a dual major in both composition and classical guitar. It was here he solidified his music theory background and mastered the art of arranging and scoring for orchestra. As an instrumentalist, he performed classical guitar as a soloist, in duos and trios. He was percussionist in the university orchestra and supportive saxophonist in the university’s jazz band.
He says about his debut album:
“ Out Of The Blue is all about multi genre blending. You know from the very first piece that the album is different. Lady Christina (my wife) is a blend of Jazz and hard Rock with an evocative Spanish melody. Tonal Flavors is a blend of Big Band Jazz, Rock and Orchestra. The Call Of The Thunder God (CTG as I like to call it for short) is a 7+ minute work that blends Native American (my wife is part Cherokee), Classical, Jazz and Heavy Metal. I also incorporated elements of nature in the work as well as introduced some of my novel guitar techniques (note: many of the sound effects on CTG were done on guitar; even the ones you swear were done on a synthesizer)”.
What are his future plans?
“As of this writing, I have more compositional works than I can probably get to in my lifetime. If "Out Of The Blue" is successful, it will free up more time for me to address these. I have some wild ideas in audio engineering I want to try on the next album as well as some other unorthodox guitar techniques that I developed”
What drives Zipps pursuit of compositional excellence?
“The pleasure anybody gets out of doing what their passionate about. I know it’s a cliché, but never the less true: Music is a universal language that transcends cultural differences; which as stated earlier, is an area I’ve held a long fascination with. That said however, I do hope in the long run that my tiny contribution will inspire other composers/musicians to cross barriers, deviate from the norm and add their own signature to the time honored art form will call music”
Musical influences: The Beatles, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Glen Miller, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky.
