MP3 Ann Walton - Top of the Hill

Ann Walton''s songs are reminiscent of crackly old jazz records as well as contemporaries like Rufus Wainwright.

FOLK: Folk-Jazz, FOLK: Folk Blues

Details:
When she was 25 she took a trek out to the lake by herself, with a piano and a guitar in the back of her truck. Before her lakeside adventure, Ann graced open mic stages with a guitar, but a retreat to the woods changed everything. She returned home with a fresh batch of songs and a new instrument of choice. And so came '' Top of the Hill'' - Ann''s debut album - seemingly from out of nowhere.

''Top of the Hill'' was conceived in a small, one room cabin in Wasagaming, Manitoba. Ann brought along hundreds of passages and poems she had written over the years and started marrying them with a few musical phrases. It was only when she couldn''t quite manage a passage technically on the guitar that Ann sat down at the piano. Many rough drafts were recorded on an old four track recorder. A year and a half later Ann entered the studio to record and self produce her debut album.

It may be obvious to some listeners that Ann grew up listening to old jazz records, but her influences vary broadly - from classical to folk, from country to swing. Long before she started her professional career, Ann has been experimenting with music, language and story telling. She has accumulated a vast and diverse repertoire, including several instrumental pieces, and compositions for modern dance. Her first love however, has always been language - and the simple art of putting words to paper.

Since releasing her debut album Ann has graced stages from Vancouver to Toronto and has performed at a variety of conferences and showcases. She has also recently shared stages with Mark Berube and Steve Forbert.

"Ann Walton is the sort of performer who comes along and causes people like me to go over-the-top crazy with praise. Playing cabaret-infused piano ballads and waltzes, and singing in a quiet, almost slurred drawl, Walton is an immediately arresting singer/songwriter who backs up her unique sound with plenty of substance. Her lyrical imagery is precise, well-considered and wonderfully off-kilter (the album''s closing song is a paean to CBC TV correspondent Brian Stewart) and her songs emerge here as fully realized entities, replete with standup bass, brushed snare, occasional accordion and deliberately distressed, old-tyme sonics. Hearing this album is as exciting as discovering Jane Siberry, Mary Margaret O''Hara or Veda Hille for the first time".
