The Jazz Marauders are excited to present this recording full of
original music. We continue our journey through distant lands and
times with a cool ten of our best works to date. The compositional
style is collaborative and spontaneous to parallel our approach to
performance. The beat is contagious and the emotions high in this
joyful collection.
The CD opens with a stroll down a street in BOGOTA, to the beat of the
Tambora rhythm. Michel says "I wrote this song for all of my friends
from Colombia who live in USA. Like my friends, I know how hard it is
to live far from your home."
Tal''s CHA CHA QUEEN was born in the dance studio. "As I followed the
graceful cha-cha steps of the instructor, I was inspired to edge the
rhythm just a little off-balance. The dancer responded to my challenge
in kind and kept up with ease! This tune is dedicated to the many
wonderful talented female musicians I had the pleasure to play with
over the years."
A run through the woods on a spring morning sets the pace for Don''s
composition, NEW DEW. "It''s a gentle samba with a very simple
structure. I wrote it as sort of a happy love song - happy to be out
smelling, seeing and touching nature and open to love in the air".
According to J.K Rowling, POLYJUICE is an extremely difficult to make
potion, used to assume the appearance of another person. Likewise,
Tal''s song "shape-shifts frequently as it moves back and forth from
one rhythm to another. Just when you think you have discovered its
true essence, it transforms into something else."
In a dance hall in 1946, the drummer calls the dancers to their feet.
The ''little big band'' sound of the Marauders is reinforced with two
horns in Don''s SPACE FOR RENT, a classic swing number reminiscent of a
Gene Krupa feature. "It gives us all a chance to show a different
side of our playing. There are exciting beats still echoing from my
parent''s generation".
Michel wrote KITI, one of the gentler tunes on the recording. "I
remember one time when I was sitting on the chair looking for a melody
with my guitar, my friend''s cat came and sat close to me. One melody
came to my head and I started to write the song. This song was
inspired by Kiti the cat."
Karina contributed the lovely composition PEQUENA VOLVORETA to the
mix. "The name of this song [Little Butterfly] came from the Gallego
language spoken in the northwest of Spain. The rhythm is baio and I
used two 7 chords consecutively to give more baio feel on the
composition."
Bones from ancient hominids, the Neanderthals, were discovered by
workers in the Neander Valley in the mid 1800s. "I thought about how
they might have enjoyed a primitive dance around a campfire at night.
It''s up to the listener to determine if I''m talking about the
Neanderthals or their discoverers". Don''s original DANCE IN THE
NEANDER VALLEY was little more than a sketch with a marking of
"primitivo" for the rhythm; Karina, Tal and Michel together invented a
new style to match the idea behind the song.
Tal wrote AYLA for "my feisty two-year-old daughter. The moods in this
piece shift almost as quickly as hers. There is calm, there is exploding
energy, and there''s harmony".
SAMBA FELIZ, originally titled Threedom, was written for three of
Tal''s prized students as a tribute to the freedom they had achieved as
improvisers. "Since its beginnings, the piece has received a full
''Marauders treatment,'' with everyone in the group contributing to its
current shape."
That sort of collaborative energy is buzzing throughout this
collection. No matter where they roam, the Marauders work as a spirited
team as they explore new territory.
