I just decided to forego that, and admit that I am all three.
But, so are you. Welcome to the human race!
You decide for yourself: Which track is meanest? Which is dumbest?
And, which is craziest? It’s all up to you!
This CD contains some recently found treasures. First was a tape of
Dave McEver & I made when we were in high school in the late 1960s.
It is the source of #09, #11 & #19. Thanks to Wally Brown for making, preserving and digitizing it for me! It’s now about 40 years old.
There was also a CD of Keyboard solos, which I lost and found again after
5 years or so. Those songs are tracks 03, 05, 12, 14 & 16. Whew!
These were done in the early 21st Century.
01 One Small Voice Although I wrote and recorded this in the early 70s, that recording is lost. So this is a 2008 solo remake, with some improved lyrics.
02 Nothin’ Under the Sun Music by Dave McEver, Lyrics by Thomas Nowlin Harrison. We wrote & recorded this in the last half of the seventies at Dave’s parent’s house in OKC. Dave on guitar & me on bass. Both did lead & harmony vocals. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
03 Wandering Aramean A keyboard instrumental solo, thanks to Raylene for the instrument. Has a “Hebrew feel”.
04 Hot Break-Uh Hendrix and R&B brought this one out of me in high school, and I recorded it a bit later in the mid seventies. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
05 Crispy & Crunchy A keyboard instrumental solo, and wanders pretty far out.
06 Like a Friend I wrote and recorded this song at the same time, and you can actually hear me turning the machine on and off as the song progresses! I meant to do that… From the last half of the seventies. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
07 Lend Me yer Pipe Just a goofy song about a guy who wants his gal to stop smoking tobacco in a pipe all the time. Does anyone still remember Mammy Yokum from the Li’l Abner comic strip? C’mon, people! LMYP was written in the early 1970s, and recorded late in that decade. No deep meaning… or is there? NAH!
08 Tomcat Funk 2 TF1 is a bonus track, and both are different mixes of the same tape. TF1 is my original concept, but TF2 is more interesting to me, because it goes back & forth between several lead guitars, one of which is backwards. A very Jimi Hendrix-y song. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
09 Ours Alone The first song Dave McEver & I wrote together, I think. We were so serious for such a couple of goofs. Dave plays guitar, and I play Wally’s Hammond B-3. I’m no organist, but it sounded okay, once I recalled the chords. Mark Brown sat in on drums.
10 Jammy B Badde A guitar/bass solo jam from the late 1970s. Again, it’s in the Hendrix / Stevie Ray Vaughan tradition. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
11 Rules of the Road Probably the second song Dave & I wrote. Rather philosophical for a pair of hyperactives. Dave’s on guitar, while I played Wally’s vibraphone (first and last attempt), and I think was amazingly successful. Despite our trademark flubs, even.
12 Fueling Banjo Keyboard solo with strange use of a banjo voice that really made it for me. Not your daddy’s bluegrass.
13 Rainin’ One of the two things I recorded when I had a Yamaha polyphonic synthesizer. The saddest song I know. I added instruments in 2008.
14 Huey’s Pursuit The rhythm track reminds me of Huey Lewis & the News, which explains the title. Another keyboard solo by yours truly.
15 Louella 2 Unlike Sweet Louella, this one is solo and used acoustic guitar. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
16 Sweetie Pie Keyboard solo time again! I had a lot of trouble getting this recording on a CD, and don’t know why.
17 Sing 4 Me 2 (Bonus Track) The first of five Bonus Tracks. You’re welcome! Recorded in the mid-1970s with help from Graham Pugh on lead guitar at his place in Midwest City, OK. I did the rest. This track is flavored by my appreciation for Harry Nilsson.
18 Stratte Strutte More Hendrix, and a taste of Jeff Beck creeps in, too. A guitar instrumental solo jam from the last half of the seventies. Rhythm overdubs by me in 2008.
19 Never (68-08) In the Wally Brown session, we did this as a backing track, but never returned to it. Same personnel as #09. Then, in 2008 I added 8 of my own vocals to it in improvised harmony, making it very… unique? Let’s hear it for the Tom Harrison Men’s Chorus! (Raspberry)
20 Kewl Dryve 2 (Bonus Track) This is an alternate recording of the song on my previous CD, “2 B with U”. All these Bonus Tracks are alternates from that collection, except #22. A keyboard solo. Very similar to KD1, but the lead parts are quite different, as is the ending.
21 Do You Really 2 (Bonus Track) The only other thing I recorded when I had a Yamaha polyphonic synthesizer in the late 1970s. I added overdubs of 2 vocals, 2 guitars and rhythm instruments in 2008. Original guitar and vocal can barely be heard.
22 Tomcat Funk 1 (Bonus Track) I really debated which should be the bonus, because I like both versions. This one is the original concept, and should be consulted to understand the other. This one also has no rhythm overdubs, but lots of rhythm going on. Nothing but electric guitar & bass.
23 Out the Door 2 (Bonus Track) This is the most unadorned track on this CD. I really like the lead guitar solo better than the smoother version.
24 MDK Finale MDK = Mean, Dumb and Krazy. Then I decided to leave the K out, but left it in this title. See, I told you I’m flawed! Or, hey, maybe K stands for KEWL! Anyway, you get three songs in one here, sort of. First is a recording of some weird vocal noises I recorded, which begins and ends the cut. Next comes an except of “Found a River” by me & Dave (with a third vocal by me). Finally comes the most important part, a little tribute to Chip ‘n Dale, called “Goin’ Away”. If that doesn’t bring down the curtain, what will?
