The Wilderbeats are Nova Scotia-based singer-songwriters Joyce Saunders and Ashley Moffat who came together in the Spring of 2001 to perform original, kid-friendly music about nature for audiences at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History in Halifax.
"Little Miss Moffat" moved to Halifax from Ontario in 2000 to make a splash in the East Coast music scene, and while employed as a Museum interpreter, was asked to write some songs for an upcoming March Break program, along the theme of birds. She agreed and recruited the help of her new musical friend Joyce, then a Museum volunteer. On the fateful day of their eight back-to-back performances, they were astounded and inspired by the tremendous response from their listeners and decided to make something of it.
The pair became "The Wilderbeats" and continued to write March Break-themed material and perform at sing-a-long campfires in the Museum''s backyard. Over time, they branched out and developed a broader fan and touring base and are now sought after among elementary schools, libraries, festivals, and various civic events for their unique, educational entertainment.
Ashley works as a seasonal interpreter at Kejimkujik National Park in Southern Nova Scotia and regularly performs at the park''s outdoor theatre. Joyce lives and works in Halifax as a musician and part-time postal worker. Both women hold up their ends to maintain and create opportunities for The Wilderbeats and frequently recruit other talented artists for their shows and recordings. In their favourite talent pool swims poly-instrumentalist Evan Kolvoord, percussionist Benn Ross, and bass player Lukas Pearse.
Through the making and sharing of interactive, educational music, The Wilderbeats aspire to fascinate kids of all ages with the wonders of nature and inspire environmental awareness and stewardship. Wacky Wilderbeat song fodder runs the gamut from yaks to blue mussels, tamarack trees to nocturnal animals. The Wilderbeats'' debut album "Live in Concert" (2003) earned a nomination for "best children''s recording" at the 2006 East Coast Music Awards. In August 2006, the pair released their full-length studio album, bearing the appropriate title "Second Nature".
