____ REVIEW *******

The Legend of Chico Shanghai

This band''s debut album is groovy, soulful, poetic, enchanting and
anything but unoriginal. Put Jazz, R&B, Blues, African percussion,
Techno, and World music in blender and push the start button. After 30 seconds, turn it off, pour it into a glass and take a sip. The
resulting taste is the epitome of Weather Outpost 12.

This Boston based ensemble''s seventeen-track debut album, "The Legend of Chico Shanghai and Other True and Tawdry Tales," quenches the musical palate with harmonious melodies and eclectic sound effects that depict the original tales of religion, life and the pursuit of happiness. The band is made up of vocals, guitar, bass, drums and a few other extremities including
alternate percussion, sheet metal, clapping, and even plastic bags.
They are truly unique to say the least.

The bandleader and vocalist, La Gringa, permeates each track with her sexy, sultry voice and her eerie sense of pitch. Even though she does utilize every facet of her five-octave range, her melodies seem much too complex at times. La Gringa wrote the majority of the songs on the album. Her lyrics are extremely philosophical and symbolic.

In "The Ballad of the Wolf" you can truly feel these emotions as she sings "His woman. She knows he''s coming by the fire that proceeds him. Burning down the street!"

The rhythm section throughout the whole album is amazing. "The Kid" Scannella performs the awe-inspiring bass riff for the intro to "Sam The Ripper" that would make anyone want get up and dance. "The Ballad of the Wolf" is an afoxe for the soul that features a provocative guitar riff provided by the wolf himself, Pedro Ito.

The track "Highway of God", with bass performance by Daniel Day, opens with a chant that puts you in an old Roman cathedral. There is the element of wind blowing, which is deeply riveting. It hypnotizes the mind and takes you to a peaceful sanctuary. You are immediately awakened by the intense beat of African
percussion that will make your head spin.

The harmonies are tight and the musicianship is genius. Although, like most other extremely talented music ensembles, Weather Outpost 12 may not appeal to the ordinary. Their music delves deep in the complex and extraordinary. After listening to Weather Outpost 12, you will find yourself trying to make sense of what you just heard. I was left in perplexed state of mind, and I still have not been able to decide if this is for the better or worse.
