Music Is My Life
(The Ghettodreamz Movement)

Welcome to the crazy world of Dick Darby, who isn''t your typical emcee. Even though his music is heavily influenced by hip hop, it wouldn''t be quite accurate to call him a rap artist when he is so much more. With three releases under his belt, Dick continues to make music that pushes the boundaries of hip hop, and the best example of this would be his latest release, The Ghettodreamz Movement: Songs Inspired By The New Orleans Housing Developments. On this compilation Dick experiments with futuristic beats, rock, neo soul, and traditional secondline music while also maintaining a hip hop influence that can be heard in both the music and the lyrics. Contributing artists include several talented N.O. natives like, Likwid, The Flame, Lady May, and Lady Rider, to name a few.

Dick''s often been compared to the Atlanta based duo Outkast, due to the fact that he is constantly reinventing his style and always thinking outside the box. However, he credits his musical influences to world renowned artists like Arrested Development, Professor Longhair, and Jimi Hendrix, and local New Orleans street performers and brass bands. But his family deserves the most credit, having exposed him to music since he was a little boy. Born in Cleveland, Dick moved to New Orleans with his mother and two brothers at the age of three. He grew up around his grandmother, the late Olivia "Lady Charlotte" Cook, a well known jazz pianist and singer in New Orleans. Not to mention his brother Howard, a.k.a. DJ HC, who grew up to be a respected turntabalist, formerly apart of the 80s hip hop group, Ninja Crew, which also included well known recording artist, Mannie Fresh of Motown Records. With the help of a musically gifted family it''s no wonder Dick got into music at such a young age. As he recalls, his very first performance was at age six, when he sang "Oh Dolly," at Louis Armstrong Park in New Orleans, for a talent show put together by the summer camp he was attending.

Currently, Dick is working on his next album titled, Music Is My Life, due to drop in the summer of 2005 on his Ghettodreamz Movement label. For this project he''s getting together with the well known Baton Rouge production team, The Medicine Men, who recently produced Ludacris'' club banger "Get Back," to create what he promises to be an album that will surprise all his fans. He intends to keep it new and creative, going in a different direction than he has in the past, guest appearances by Likwid, The Soul Rebels, Johnny Sketch and The Dirty Notes, and more. One thing he will say about the album is that he plans on it sounding more rock influenced, but that is the only information Dick is offering at this time. With a title like, Music Is My Life, it''s sure to be a very personal album that embodies all of Dick, mind, body, and soul. With lyrics that come from his heart, explaining his life experiences with respect to past loves, his children, and his struggles living as a black man in a racist society.
